Poor Gaming Performance

Would anybody have a clue as to why my gaming performance is so poor? I've just installed a new GTX 580 and to my surprise Crysis is incredibly laggy. Even on just high settings at 1080p there is enough stuttering and lag to make the game very unenjoyable, almost unplayable. I've attached the results from a FRAPS benchmark (run on very high settings with no AA) and would like to know what others think. It worth noting that even when FRAPS is reporting fair numbers (30+) the game still seems to lock up. Is it possible the CPU is bottlenecking the whole system as I haven't overclocked it from the standard 2.67GHz?

Maybe on a related note I am having troubles with massive flickering of the light effects in GTA IV EFLC (street lights, break lights, signs etc) and although I seem to have gotten the game to run lag free almost all the time, I get sudden moments every so often, where the whole thing locks up for a 1-1.5 secs?

could be the onboard video is enabled check your bios

I would like to point out the drivers may not be fully operatable yet see if they have a update

looking at your psu is it 850 watt? if so that is not a issue there that is more then enough to power it

Did you run driver sweeper to remove your previous cards drivers completely prior to installing the 580?

My board is without onboard graphics. yea the psu is an AX850 pretty top notch really.

Yes always do.

btw I''ve just replaced my 4870x2 with this GTX 580, as things were atrocious with that as well...strangely Crysis performance was better but GTA IV was worse (both were still bad tough)?

A GTX 580 should murder Crysis.

Here's a to-do list for ya:

Make sure Crysis is patched to the latest build (I remember Crysis having some issues with 64 bit OS'es a while back)
Make sure you uninstalled your previous GPU drivers correctly (more so if your previous card was an AMD card, there's a nice little guide over @ NVIDIA's forums)
Flash your motherboard's BIOS
Run different stress tests on your GPU (just to make sure everything is nice and stable, [Furmark, etc])
Remove any CPU/GPU overclocks.

EDIT: Couple more things:

Try disabling NVIDIA's HD Audio devices via Device Manager.

Run it in the background while gaming to see if there are any drop-outs in your latency.

Just to reply to this bit:
1. Yes got the latest patches
2. Yes uninstalled old drivers and went over with DriverSweeper
3. Just tried again but same result, when I flash my BIOS to the latest (1108) it won't let me have X.M.P memory profiles on without the PC blue-screening right after the Windows is Starting logo and restarting. (with X.M.P off it loads up fine).
4. Done prime95 * OCCT, both ran fine for hours.
5. No overclocks at all.

Just to add a few more points...I've been having problems with my PC randomly locking up/freezing for months but have been tirelessly changing out components and running tests. So far I've changed out the memory, PSU, GPU and have tested the memory (memtest86+) and hard drives (WD diagnostics). Although I've not had a lock up today (got the 580 today) I'm not confident it has gone, however I will have to wait and see because it could happen 1min from now or 2 weeks...it's that random lol. Also there is a count down timer for the Asus ExpressGate feature right before the post screen. I mention this because weirdly it sometimes fails to finish its count down, stopping by itself when it should only do so if you move the mouse.
Lastly, I won't go into the reasons why, but the i7 920 is an OEM out of a Dell, could this possibly be the cause of all the troubles.

Basically I'm at the stage where I suspect either the mobo or the cpu but would like advice on which is most likely, or even if there's something else I've missed. btw I will go away and try the other advice you've given...as well as roll back my bios lol.

one more thing my Core i7 does seem to run a bit warm from what I've read, idling it sits between 40-45c...this is with a Noctua nh-u12p se2. :eek:

Just to reply to this bit:

Could be the motherboard, doubt it's the CPU.

Try those tips I mentioned on my edits and post back your results.

Will do, I've already run DPC (all be it without X.M.P enabled) and the result was Absolute Maximum: 191. Take it that's okay (well in the green)? Also would it be okay if I just uninstall Nivdia HD Audio driver along with the 3D driver, guess it would achieve the same result? Anyway I must say a big thank you for your time and help but I'm afraid I must get some sleep before its daylight here lol

Those temps are fine.

Also, as much as Crysis and GTA IV would benefit from an overclock, bottlenecking is not the issue here.

Unless it was damaged being removed from the Dell and/or is improperly seated, no. But you have piqued my curiosity

I'd also err on the side it being a mobo issue.

As a test - have you tried the card in the 2nd PCI-E slot? (rule out a dodgy slot)

And if you don't use Express Gate - turn it off in.

Im almost certain if it isnt a bad pci-e slot it might be a bad card

I would also like to think the bugs and kinks are still being ironed out with these card
some gaming platforms doesnt even reconize them yet i always get a message from steam about the new hd6870

They always want information but still havnt updated my card in thiere data base
If nothing is resolved with the previous i would probally return the card and go for a lower model and save some cash

I also would like to point out you did good with a hd series card
maybe your mobo is picky time will tell also alot of post features should be turned off espcecially if you have no need for them like the count down you speak of seems to be more a eyesore then a helper

Yea I'm kind of thinking it's the mobo, will probably call Asus on Monday to sort out an RMA. I did try to fit the card into the second slot but what with the e-sata cables and the bottom mounted psu, the space is too tight for a double hight card...in any case if the slot is broken then I would still RMA the board as it is effectively broken. Also I might well turn off Express Gate as I don't use it but it's pretty likely it's a side issue to the main trouble with performance. Finally, the issue of the system giving a BSOD at start up if on the latest BIOS with X.M.P enabled is the final pointer for me that the board is cooked, as its a pretty popular mobo and from my searches I couldn't find anybody else with the problem.

The 4870x2 I had before was also hopeless, I couldn't get a single game to work without serious glitching or terrible stuttering/bad fps. This is why I can only assume the GTX 580 is fine; it can't be that every GPU in the world is broken lol.

GPU might not be broken but seems like the name brand choice in boards might be the downfall every tryed using another brand sometime reviews are not always what they seem

I'm not quite sure what you mean, are you talking about the mobo brand or the GPU brand? The mobo is Asus and the video card is Nivida/Inno3D...the GPU before that was ATi/PowerColor.

The GTX 580 is so new that pretty much all of them a reference cards, bog standard design.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, are you talking about the mobo brand or the GPU brand? The mobo is Asus and the video card is Nivida/Inno3D...the GPU before that was ATi/PowerColor.

The GTX 580 is so new that pretty much all of them a reference cards, bog standard design.

I mean the mainboard i see alot of issues with Asus boards on here the gpu is still really new as well im still ironing out my new gpu but the mainboard im always hearing something about Asus always being rma or defective

Even if it isn't the board, you'll at least eliminate another variable. Good luck with the process. Hopefully you'll get a quick turnaround and it will sort your issues out.

I wouldn't say always. My current board is perfectly fine.

Along with Asus, there are also plenty of defective Gigabyte, MSI, Asrock, EVG, XFX etc boards as well.

It's luck of the draw really.

Right, motherboard has been sent back and they've confirmed it to be faulty, trouble is they don't have it in stock. Good news is I can go for a different board and pay/receive the difference.

What would you (and anybody else) recommend?

I've always bought Asus mainboards. The first one in 1998 had a voltage problem and was RMAd with no problems on the replacement nor any board since. The Asus P6T I have now has been trouble free.

Like smarteyeball said, luck of the draw and you can find problems with all brands and with most all models.
