frequent seemingly random crashes

So I first installed Win 7 two weeks ago, and I loved it. Then earlier this week I started getting bluescreen crashes.

So this afternoon I reinstalled. I'm using 7100 64bit.

Again, I started getting random crashes. I can't for the life of me figure it out. The crashes happen ever 2 minutes - 2 hours. I can't see any common factor in the crashes. They seem random.

Specs:
Intel Q6600
4GB ram
Asus P5Q Deluxe
Geforce 8800 GTS

Programs I've installed:
Nvidia Drivers (185.85 for Win 7 65bit)
Firefox + extensions
Launchy
Daemon Tools
Roboform

EDIT: I should mention I used Vista for many months prior to this wirh absolutely no problems.

Here's the message I get:

Launchy would appear to overlap a bit with the Start->Search feature built in to Windows 7, so there could be a conflict (?).

And otherwise I'd personally suspect compatibility with Firefox and its plugins is low on MS's priority list.

Suppose it could be the 65 bit Nvidia drivers though. :)

:) Ehh. I'll try uninstalling launchy tonight. Does the crash data say anything? Would upgrading to 7201 possibly fix my problem? Is there anything else I should try before I give up?

Uninstalled Launchy. Still am getting the lock-ups. Anyone have any ideas?

I think it's driver related or if all the most recent drivers for all your hardware are installed, then, it may be hardware related. If it's hardware related, I would bet on the RAM.

Also, what is the stop code of the blue-screen? If the computer reboots automatically when there's a BSOD, I would suggest you to uncheck the "Restart automatically the computer when there's a Blue Screen". It must be in the Advanced options. I'm sure there is a tutorial on this (either here or on Vista forums).

When this is done, when it'll happen, note it down or better, take a picture. Then, this code will probably give us a good idea what is the problem.

Later.

A STOP 0x124 error is most often hardware related, but can also be a compatibility issue or a driver issue. The problem is that the error message is created by the processor and not by Windows - so the dump file doesn't tell us much.

I would suspect the drivers for the Asus motherboard (there's been some reports of issues with this board), and issues with Daemon Tools - but that's just a guess on my part.

Here's the analysis of the memory dump:

Later.

When windows crashes, it doesn't actually show a blue screen. It just stops responding, and the sound loops. When I reset it, and Windows loads again is when I get the message I posted above.

@usasma If it is motherboard issues, what can I do? I tried installing Vista drivers, but setup won't run because it's the wrong OS.

There's a chance that if I updated to 7201, some of thus stuff would be resolved?

Thanks for your help.

ya bro u have although a same prblm as i..

had ur problm resigned or still there

I still am having the frequent lock-ups. I've tried loads of things. Even a clean install did nothing. When I get home from work today I'll install 7201 and see if that makes a difference.

Hmm. Well I had a Vista 32bit install I used for nearly a year with no problems. For me that rules out motherboard problem, unless it's a problem that started around the same time that I installed Win 7.

Then, if doesn't give a STOP message, then it'd be hard to tell if it's hardware related.

Here's what I would try : Uninstall every software and install them one by one. From this, see if the craches comes from Windows or the software. If there are no software and it still crashes, then we can believe it's hardware related. If after a certain installation Windows crashes, then you found your problem.

I had the same problem. I unplugged my DVD burner and it stopped. But that wasn't the complete issue. It turns out my PSU wasn't giving enough power to the PC, which was causing the lock ups. Sent my PSU back this morning and am getting a new one.

If it's a hardware problem (as most STOP 0x124 errors are), then the best thing to do is to strip every piece of hardware that's not necessary to install/use the OS.

That'll either fix the problems or it won't.

If it fixes it, then the problem is with the stuff that you removed.
If it doesn't fix it, then the problem is with the stuff that's still on the system.

I would suggest installing the drivers in compatibility mode using both "Run as Vista SP1" and "Run as administrator" - making sure that you select the option to run this for ALL USERS.

That makes lots of sense. What doesn't make sense is that on a clean install (7201 64bit, only installed video drivers + firefox) I was getting crashes every 20 minutes. But when I went ahead and booted up my old Vista 32bit install, it has run flawlessly all evening (6+ hours).

So what I have is a (hardware? driver?) problem exclusive to Win 7.

Or could it maybe be a bad hard drive? I'm using two different hard drives for the two OS's. What program should I use to scan it?

Could it be crashes cause by a 64bit system? Would I have better luck with Win 7 32bit?

Vista seems worse then it did before I used Win 7. :) Hopefully I can figure out a way getting this fixed. Thanks for all your ideas/help!

Windows 7 is different from Windows Vista. Microsoft has made attempts to ensure compatibility - but that doesn't always work. For example, my RAID card is Vista comaptible, but is not compatible with Windows 7.

Most BSOD/STOP errors are generated by Windows, this one is one of the exceptions - because it's generated by the processor. As such, the information that it provides has to be analyzed by someone familiar with the structure of your CPU (processor).

Enough is known about these errors to say that they are primarily hardware errors - but that leaves a lot of ground open - Is it a hardware failure? Is it an incompatibility? Is it a driver issue? Is it a Windows problem?

And, if your system isn't 64 bit compatible, then you'll have additional issues.

Probably the easiest thing to do (since you've reinstalled Vista) would be to run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor beta. It's free from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...90-7659-4BD9-9E51-2497C146AF15&displaylang=en

I did used scndsk to check the hard drive I was using for Win 7. Computer locked up twice while doing it, both times while scanning the same sector.
That's a pretty definite problem right? I'm hoping that when I install on another hard drive, and I'll have no more problems!

Can I use the faulty hard drive any way? Repair it somehow? Use it as a 3rd hard drive to download non-important files to? Or am I better off just throwing it away? It's a 250GB Western Digital sata.
