How often does you AV save you from an infection?

Just to satisfy my curiosity. :geek:

How often does your antivirus programs stop an infection from happening? I'm not talking about things like play.exe renamed to mp3 files. My mom gets those all the time and they do nothing. A real infection. Also, what where you doing that caused it?

Thanks

Its a not very common event for me, usually my Av will pick it up, but last time i got an infection, it cleaned me right out, ended up formating and starting fresh, was the win32.virut. and i got it from a keygen for a program i have lost the serial code for, i got the code, but got a nasty suprise as well.

Not often, is your answer, because i stick to site i know, and i dont visit "adult" sites, that usually have a hidden suprise, besides the one your expecting.

In the last couple of years, Avast has alerted me to at least two different items of malware from sites where one would not expect to find them. One was on the site for one of my favorite restaurants - go figure.

If I ever download something and unzip or unrar something that is a virus, my avg will throw up a window giving me the option to delete it. So I'd say my avg keeps me from getting infected about as often as I download something that will infect me.

Please red the question asked carefully. If you read it right, your answers should look something like this...
6 months ago I downloaded x from such and such website and was going to run it but my AV alerted me that it was infected so I delete it instead
I'm not interested in how your spouses, parents, kids, etc, treat computers. Just you.

Thanks again.

OK, I checked that link you posted and loaded the "trojan" disguised as a jpg and nothing. A browser is not going to execute jpgs as javascript.

http://pastebin.com/f78e90a58The contents of logo.jpg: http://pastebin.com/f78e90a58

So I guess that doesn't qualify as something that would have infected you.

Thanks for your info though.

Anti virus stops all of them (eset smart security & microsoft security essentials) and I was visiting a known propagating site. I visit alot of questionable sites (not adult) but have only been infected once

I also visit those types of sites but I've never been infected even without running any AV.

I think a lot of it is like that logo.jpg that Dixon Butz pointed me to. It's really a false positive even though it's malicious code. I kinda recall one hotfix for a gdi exploit in jpgs but that was patched a long time ago.

the one time I got a nasty I had (yeah I know) disabled AV for some maint. thing and loaded an unknown disk. I get alot of false positives but nothing else. I have become so used to ESS doing its job I dont even really monitor like a hawk. MSE is a little touchy. It even thought its own virus defs were a virus
