Microsoft is reportedly gearing up to release the Release Candidate of Internet Explorer 9 by the end of January 2011.

The Redmond company has yet to confirm or deny third-party reports that claim to already have the IE9 RC availability deadline, or to comment in any way on the matter at hand.

Various sources are indicating that IE9 RC will actually drop on January 28th, 2011 (via LiveSide and sp3ciali5t), but the reports need to be taken with a grain of salt, until the software giant will offer official confirmation of the release date.

IE9 hit Beta in mid-September 2010, a launch which Microsoft marked through the Beauty of the Web event in San Francisco.

Following the release of the Beta development milestone, the company revealed that it wasn’t planning another Beta, but that RC would follow instead.

However, two additional releases of IE9 were offered to early adopters, taking the number of developer Builds to seven.

IE9 Platform Preview 7 continues to be available for download even at this point in time, alongside the Beta Build.

In fact, testers can swap the core of the IE9 Beta and replace it with the IE9 PP7 in order to get all of the benefits associated with the latest preview release.

In the three months and a half since IE9 Beta went live, the Build was downloaded in excess of 20 million times, a number which is bound to grow consistently, especially considering that the Release Candidate is close.

As it is the case with additional Microsoft software, the RC signals the fact that IE9 is extremely close to finalization, a milestone referred to as RTW (release to web), equivalent to RTM (release to manufacturing).

Microsoft already confirmed that IE9 RC will come with a new feature dubbed Tracking Protection, and designed to put users in control of their privacy and the websites they wish to share data with while online.

Hi there
It would be nice to see an end once and for all to ACTIVE-X. This is a security nightmare as even a relatively "inexperienced hacker" can patch all sorts of nasties into an ACTIVE-X enabled application.

It would be nice also if MS could re-design RDP so active-x was not required as well (both for the WEB enabled RDP and the "standard" one).

Cheers

A New Browser for the New Year - IE9 Hits 20 Million Downloads

As 2010 comes to an end, we wanted to take a look at the changes this last year in the IE world. At end of 2009, IE 6 and IE7 accounted for 38.51% of internet users, while IE8 had 24.15% of users worldwide. Fast forward twelve months later, IE6 and IE7 have shed over 40% of users and now only account for 22.98% of users worldwide - with IE6 hitting an all-time low of 13.81%. IE8 usage on the other hand has increased by almost 40% during the same time. Combined with the near half-percent of users of newly introduced IE9 Beta, the modern Internet Explorer browsers now account for 34.07% of users worldwide according to Net Applications.

We also launched IE9 in 2010, and the response to the IE9 Beta launch on September 15th has been overwhelming. IE9 Beta has been downloaded 20 million times since launch in September, and IE9 now accounts for 0.46% of internet users worldwide at year end. In the three months since the beta launch, we have also released two platform previews and became the leading browser in JavaScript performance as measured by WebKit SunSpider. We have continued to invest in consumer privacy by introducing Tracking Protection, which helps consumers to identify and block many forms of undesired tracking of their online activity. We have also seen third-party validation of the security safeguards for consumers built into IE9 with a recent NSS Labs study showing how we lead the industry in protecting our customers against online threats. And, we continue to see partners tapping into the capabilities of IE9 with over 900 sites having created experiences like Jump Lists and notifications from their pinned sites in Windows 7.
