IE9 How to Change Font to Tahoma Old Style ?

Hello dear forum members,

This is my first post here, and definately a place where I found many answers to my questions, until now.

I really tried anything to make this work, with no result, also found none solutions over the net or here in the forum.

I updated from IE8 to the latest IE9 Beta, and really like the browser except one big thing, the font render. New Vista style fonts are horrible and I want my old IE8 default Tahoma style font renderer for web pages.

After upgrading to IE9, the font settings look identical, but pages are rendered differently. I have tried numerous combinations in the Fonts settings tab with no luck, Accessibility didn't help much too, also tried Software renderer instead of Hardware, clear type ....... all with no luck.

Please tell me how to make my web page fonts displayed look like in IE8, here's what I want:

Hope you have the answer, because otherwise I'm stuck with the old IE8. This new font render is genuinly bad, poor Microsoft.

Almost forgot, operating system is Windows 7 Enterprise x64, also tried on Vista x86.

They look the same to me except that the one looks like it is Bold have you tried changing the setting to make the font bold ?

Hi, thanks for your answer. No fonts are clearly not the same, bold doesn't help at all. If it will help more I can take both IE8 and IE9 renderer side by side to see the difference more clearly, although it is obvious.

I don’t have an answer to your question and honestly I can't see much of a difference either.

Now the first line is your first pic and the second line is from your second pic.

I can't help you other than to say uninstall IE9 and go back to IE8.

Also if your eyes are crazy like mine I understand your frustration I can see the font on the second line better but if you have good eye sight I can see how that can bother you lol.

You mentioned Accessibility, I take it mean this.......

Yes, tried Accessibility with no luck ... it could be just the beta not working. To be honest I'm shocked everyone uses the new Segoe fonts that look very ugly on a >24" monitor, and didn't see the font change with the new IE9 release.

The fonts look identical to me as they are the same font, except in IE 9, it appears as if hardware based rendering has been applied to the text. Have you tried disabling the GPU acceleration? You can do this under the Advanced Tab in Internet Options and that should correct your issue. You would need to restart IE 9 to have the change take effect.

I have tried disabling the hardware acc already with no luck. Looks like it is either not possible or just not all features of the beta work properly.

After a bit of research, I think this may explain the difference: Sub-pixel Fonts in IE9 - IEBlog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs. You may want to try using Compatibility View in IE 9 on all websites. You can enable this by hitting the Alt key on your keyboard then going to Tools --> Compatibility View Settings and then make sure the "Display all websites in Compatibility View" is checked. This may help on some websites.

You are my man !!! That was exactly what I was looking for indeed the compatibility view fixes the things. Immediately after I press the ALT button sites looked correct.
For a moment I thought that this Clear Type bad thing was going to win.

problem with Cleartype and smoothing of fonts

Hi there,
I don't understand how one can fail to see the huge difference between radoslavp's two screenshots, to me the difference in display is obvious.
I have the same problem as radoslavp in IE8 when I disable cleartype (like the first screenshot appearance), and it happens whatever the font is.
I'm not getting used to the Cleartype thing, and what I don't get is why, when I disable "smoothing" and "cleartype" settings, everything just looks horrible? why can't it just look the way it used to? (I have the same LCD monitor I had with XP, so no change there, and it's on automatic settings).

I don't understand, can somebody explain?
And is there a solution (my system is Win7 x64 Home Premium, so I can't even install a virtual XP.
Is there a particular setting that would simply allow me to view texts as they used to appear, no matter what the font is?
Or, can I at least change the settings or Microsoft Word?
