I've been using Foxit Reader for years, but lately every time I try to update it I run into Ask which immediately tries to phone home, a mandatory installation of the Foxit Toolbar on my computer with no viable opt out and Ask which ends up ensconced in Task Scheduler and must be manually removed. I really like using this program, but it just comes with too much baggage is there a slim version of the Foxit Reader without all of these extras?

is there no 'custom install' option where you can untick the boxes?

i always always go for custom install these days, and always check msconfig after installing any software - particularly free stuff.

Yes there are, but after you opt out by unticking the boxes the next screen says that it is going to install them anyway! And that's when I just close the Foxit Reader installer because I do not want that junk on my computer.

which they have changed from the last version. They removed the check box for the toolbar completely and made it the Accept and Decline buttons at the bottom. Clicking on Decline continues the install, with Accept installing the toolbar. I'm guess you did the same thing I did without catching it and clicked on Accept.

So it isn't that they are force installing it, just changed how to not install it.

But if I click 'decline' then I will not have agreed to the Ask License Agreement plus nothing is mentioned about opting out of Ask becoming my default search engine. I've never seen anything like this before. Why have they made this so disgustingly complicated with this double negative opt out language and buttons? I guess this is how low Ask has had to go to trick people into installing there wares.

Just use the zip version as mitchell64 showed above. Nothing to install at all; no toolbars, not even Foxit itself gets installed. Just place the extracted folder anywhere you want, run the Foxit Reader.exe once, set it as the default PDF program if so desired, then it is good to go.

... but I think that it (probably) still phones home :( and the first time you run it, updates the Registry

Does anyone know how to get rid of that "Best reader for Everyday use" tag? I've edited the Registry but it just comes back (with v4.0 anyway).

@mitchell64 - which site is that?

Thanks Airbot.

Done. Deleted the Ask toolbar. Ran registry cleaner to see if any remnants left. None to remove.

The exe and zip version may both be the same size (4.3 MB), but they are not the same file.Using 7Zip the exe can be extracted and this is what it contains,

foxit.PNG

The zip version contains the following,

foxit1.PNG

which the extracted folder can be placed anywhere you want. As previously said all you do is run the exe in it once to set it as the default PDF viewer, etc. There is nothing to install.

Just in passing, I don't use Foxit PDF Reader. I actually use Adobe Reader X (previously I used all the earlier versions from Adobe).

However some years ago I acquired Foxit's PDF Editor which gave me what I was looking for at the time, since I didn't own Adobe Acrobat (though I do now).

Recently I upgraded to the latest version of Foxit's PDF Editor. And apparently as with Foxit PDF Reader the installation file installed ASK without my "asking" for it, and I was naturally miffed. It's been a while so I can't remember the details... whether it just got installed automatically (even though I am sure I took the "custom install" approach if offered as I ALWAYS do that no matter what the software product) or whether I thought I'd opted out and it went in anyway. Whatever the story, it went in.

However after the install, I went to Control Panel -> Programs and simply UNINSTALLED ASK which was shown there as an installed program. This uninstall went fine. No remnants, no problems, no ASK.

The easiest way when you already installed Foxit before, get the ZIP unpack it and simply exchange the installed Foxit.exe for the unzipped new version. If you want to, do the same with the updated plugin and you're all set

That's how I update Foxit, Q-Dir and a few others like forever :D

I've installed v4.3 from the Foxit Reader help >> Check for Updates menu
And used the Help >> Install updates dialogue to install the Firefox plugin (the .fzip file).

However, PDF links on web pages in Firefox 3 would not open in Foxit; Adobe Reader was always used, no matter what Option / Preference I set in Foxit Reader, Adobe Reader or Firefox.

On further investigation I saw that the npFoxitReaderPlugin.dll in the program files folder ...\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\ was still the old one. So I manually copied over the new dll from ...\Foxit Software\Foxit Reader\plugins\

This works - the PDF now display in a Firefox window (or tab), but I must have missed something simpler. Any ideas what?
