Solved Very slow transfer to NAS

Basically as stated above, my windows xp computer has an infinitely higher data transfer rate to and from my NAS drive as my two windows 7 computers do.

There is no specific error to list watching the actual drive activity though it seems to read, pause for a 4 count or so, then do a tad more, then pause.

An hour for 6 gigs to a device not 3 feet from the computer is ridiculous though.

The NAS is a buffalo 1tb linkstation with current firmware.

Are you trying to access your NAS wirelessly?

need a little more info. as chev has stated is the connection wireless ?
Wireless isn't really the medium for transferring a great deal of files on a regular basis. It's fine for mobility and accessibilty but the cost to you would be contention and lowered throughput.
if you aren't already I would suggest using a dedicated CAT5 LAN cable.
however, if you are using UTP, I have resolved quite a number of these sort of issues (here and in my place of work) with a simple swap of the CAT5 cable. There are a couple of reasons for this; firstly slow throughput can occur if the cable is damaged, also if it's not correctly rated for the transfer speed that you have requested.

other questions, have you any AV within your network ? is it scanning on reads and writes ?
what sort of transfers are you doing, lots of small files or a few large files?
what are the differences apart from OS between you XP machine and the 2 W7, hardware, transfer software, AV, Firewall, etc ?

The connection is wired, the wireless on the laptop is actually faster. It was 25 files approx 200-280meg each in size. There is a router between the computer and the NAS however, it's the same router the win xp machine passes through. I'm on basic win 7 security with mbam run for extra av once a day or so. The motherboard is nvidia, and I've been told the nvidia lan could be partly to blame. I have extra cables laying around I'll try the swap and get back to you

free space or even heavy fragmentation on your source computer can cause problems too.
You might want to check the state of the source computers hard disk for failures,bad blocks, etc.

The source is the 'cold storage' on my main rig, I'm pretty neurotic about running maintenance and keeping it up to speed. Current fragmentation on the source drive is non-existent.
Swapping cables gave me a slightly improved result, it's still much slower than expected though.

Sorry to bring a seemingly dead thread back to life but I just got around to messing with this and did finally get a solution.

Replaced both router and cable, the speed is now pretty consistent across the board.
Still is just a slight bit slower on the win 7 machines but it's not enough to bother me anymore.
