LOSS of proformance on 7

So I've bean using Win7 for a few months now. I decided to run FRAPS to see what kind of frame rate I was ACTUALLY getting. I was disappointed with the results (could have swear they use to be higher), so I ran those same benches on the old Vista install. They where about twice what I was getting on Win7. I have all the right drivers, and I have AVG anti virus.

I haven't bean keeping the Vista install up to date, but it seems to be doing better. I don't understand. I've tried updating drivers and everything else that updates... Can't figure this out. If it is useful, I could post the DxDiag.txt specs.

I don't think the fact that it is the 3rd partition on my 1TB hdd should matter, does it?

Core 2 Duo 8400
Nvidia9400 Chipset Gigabyte Motherboard
EVGA 9800 GTX+
6gb of ram (1 gb dedicated to the 9400 on board graphics card)

1TB hdd, Win7 install starts on a partition that starts in the last 1/4 of the HDD. Vista is in the first thing on the HDD.

Thx

Benches in Win7 should be roughly equivalent to those of Vista. After all, Win7 is just Vista refined.

But digital is right, you left out some pretty valuable info.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
Idk why, but in my experience I get better gaming performance in Win7 than I did in Vista. Nothing too spectacular, but I can usually bump up the graphics a setting or two on 7

about 30 fps or less on L4D win7 vs 50-60 on Vista

15-25 on Crysis Wars on Win7 vs 30-40 on Vista

a few others, but I haven't recorded anything.

Could the fact that I have 2 different graphics cards be part of it? If I disable the onboard graphics card on the motherboard, could that improve performance (My screen is plugged into the 9800)

I tried Win7 because I heard there was better performance on Win7, but I'm not seeing it.

At first I couldn't either, the game would come up then stop responding. I solved that by downloading the latest directX from the website(google directx download, that should take you to it) then I updated my graphics drivers, and all was good. maybe you could see if it would work for you

I installed DirectX 9.0c, but the drivers that come with Windows 7 are better/newer than intel's drivers. Like, they are intel's drivers, but intel doesn't have the version I have on their website.

Yet another reason to dislike intel...

Ok just a few things I want to say. I have seen a drop of 10fps in my move to windows 7.
1.) I account this too. Its still a RC not a full product.
2.) Vista has been out for some time now so companies have been about to tweak their drivers to work better on it.
3.) Windows 7 has DirectX 11, which most companies are just getting to play with now that they have the RC.

I also was getting lower fps due to my sound card drivers once I updated them, it was about half of what I am getting now which is 70-100 fps.
I noticed you stated you where getting bad fps in L4D if this is in steam update you sound drivers for some reason I have found it helps on all the systems I've messed with.

I could understand specific games requiring some tweaking from the graphics card driver, but Windows 7 causing your games to run slower just sounds like user error somewhere.

On that note, I'm sure any performance issues you're having with specific games will be fixed in a future Nvidia/ATI driver update.

I don't believe it's users error. I'm an A+ tech. I know how to install windows and drivers. I have the latest drivers and I keep updates. I built this computer. I was just wondering if any one else was having a similar problem or if it's just me. I think it might have to do with my onboard graphics card. The benches I'm getting are close to what I would get on that card with out my 9800 GTX+.

Have you tried running any test programs to make sure that your two cards are working together? Something like GPUz should be able to tell you.
I do see a bit of a drop not a major one, but I account that to Win7 being a RC and drivers for a lot of hardware are still in "beta" mode.

I'll try that.

Rebenched on mimimal settings, got about the same frame rate. Infact, when I lowered the settings i got whose frame rate (I use nvidia scaling instead of my screen's scaling, so that could account for that). It must be a driver or a windows problem. I about 2 fail solutions before I just re-install windows. Anyone know the best way to back up programs and documents?

I do not have any hard numbers and there is only one game I am playing right now and its the Last Remnant...and I have not felt any slowdowns in terms of fps but to be honest I wont be surprised even if you DO see framerate drops. As others have pointed out this is an RC OS so its not really right to compare its performance.

But the other thing I think as well...is that this OS is definitely a bit more robust, and therefore requires a bit more horsepower to do what it does, and I wont be surprised to see if its performance in games when compared to XP is indeed lacking.

I play Crysis with a 9600 GT and I get 30 fps on high. You can go into the bios and turn it off real easy mr A+ tech, if you think that's what it may be.

Common sense says if you install a AGP/PCI-E video card that onboard should be disabled in BIOS.

As far as throwing around that your an A+ tech - that pretty much means jack, anyone can buy a book and pass a test.

After you run a game, go back and look at its config file - it will tell you what renderer it's using. Hell most will tell you from console.
