I have just built myself a new PC but I am finding the stock AMD fan very noisy So went to pc shop and had a look at few option the other problem I have is I have a Micro ATX case so not much room for big cooler I purchased coolmaster 212 but there is no chance of that fitting in so I have narrowed it down to silverstone mitrogon NT06-E or Scythe Shuriken Rev.B Quiet Low Profile Cooler 3 Heat Pipe - HTPC the scythe seems to get better reviews but does not say it is AM3 compatableany one got any advice ? Any one running either of these or some thing better?

Thanks

You're welcome, ian.

Enjoy your new CPU cooler. Btw, did you buy Thermal Compound? i use Arctic Silver 5 and it's great.

Don't know if the cooler comes with pre-applied thermal paste.

Just get Isopropyl Alcohol from your local pharmacy. Make sure it's as close to 100% proof as you can get. And no, don't drink what's leftover!!
However, the most problem with Isopropyl Alcohol from pharamacies is that the active ingredient is water. Just don't drench the cloth in alcohol and rub the dye with all your strength. To clean any thermal grease/compound, rub in a circular motion and increase strength if necessary.

But if you can get your hands on some Isopropyl Alcohol that does not contain water than that would be a better solution.

Good Luck cleaning.

I guess that says it all :)

And that's what i personally use.. a tiny bit of alcohol to remove and then a dry soft cloth.

You need Aksassa TIMclean, that's what I use.

But "Farmhouse Distilled" Irish Potcheen will do the same thing ;-)

Hmm.. try to remove the old thermal paste with your fingernail... carefully because you don't want to damage the chip.. then you could use a toothbrush to remove the leftovers, are you sure you don't have isopropyl alcohol in your place?!? it should be on your First Aid Kit! hehehe

I'd just go with a cotton ball and the Isopropyl Alcohol it works really well and is all I've ever used.

Well guys we managed to do it more by luck than judgement I think I managed to bend some of the prongs on the CPU that was fun trying to straighten them up as you got some straight you bent the ones next to it was about to junk it then had one more try and had to push it in but it in and seems to work I guess if had not done it right it would not work! Runs really quite I must admit I really did enjoy building the pc bit like build car but without getting dirty and cold LOL

Thanks again for all your help and advice i would not have attemted it without your support fingers crossed silly questions over for a while now !!

It was the old Cooler and Chip with the paste on was like super glue did not realise to twist it to break the paste was worried about snapping the Processor in half and as for bending the pins that was a nightmare! But is working fine so far and is really quite too which is what I wanted to achieve, I mus admit did enjoy building it apart from the two problems above !

Glad you got it sorted.
I've had the same problem as you with an old DELL, the cpu had basically welded itself to the cooler with the thermal grease providing the glue!!

Lucky boy with the pins, that normally means bye bye cpu.

Once you start building PC's it becomes a drug...I have 3 seperate projects on the go at the moment - friend keep donating me 'Dead' PC's, I pick them up from the local recycling center...good luck.
