Mystery one

I have just fixed up a laptop for a mate who hasn't got a lot of dough to play around with and he got this laptop at a "bargain" price, with 7 Home Premium on it.

Now the machine was originally a Vista based OS and I assumed that the seller had upgraded or formatted the machine to the 7. So we went ahead with the new updates a including the SP1 and all went well except that the SP1 would not load.

On closer inspection - and I am not that savvy at all found no firewall enabled or security except for Defender. I subsequently found out in this forum that the error messages were due to SP1 not downloading because of malware.

Ran GMER, HiJackthis, and TDDS Killer and came up with loads of files that I don't undertsand except for the Kaspersky finding Rootkit.Win32.TDDS_tdl4 promptly removed it with the cure and SP1 went fine.

Now I find the WMP is a very old version and am having no luck in getting an updated version of this app, Can someone let me know how to get the 11 or 12 version onto the machine as there is no update feature with the app at the moment.

Sorry to be a nuisance but it's been a very long day getting this machine into some sort of order for him, as it's for one of the kids for school.

Grief I could give the seller a piece of my mind if I knew who they were cripes there's some ratbags around.

Go to Control Panel - Programs & Features and on the left click on Turn Windows features on or off. You should get this window and see if Window Media Player is selected.



If you have an older version installed you may have to delete it first. A good free one is VideoLAN - VLC media player, Open Source video framework for every OS! I use it instead of WMP.
