I would like to make a backup of a DVD. Do not know if it's copy-protected.
Should I download/install any specific program, or is it possible to do directly
through Win7 64-bit?
I GOOGLEd this topic and read quite a bit, and could not get straight with it.
Thanks, Chuck

I believe one copy is allowed and i usually use Nero and I have two drives in my desktop so I put source disc in the bottom drive put blank DVD in top drive and select copy disc from Nero interface and set to lowest burn setting and that is all there is to it for all the disc's i have made copy's, but i am not sure that is the question your need answered or do you want to know how to copy a DVD with Windows 7 64 bit.

Microsoft did a much better job with the burning utilities and capabilities in Windows 7 than previous versions of Windows, but I still got frustrated with them and quit. I use ImgBurn. It's free and easy. The Official ImgBurn Website

Something like CDBurnXP, ImgBurn, BurnAware, etc would work just fine, assuming the disc is not copy-protected. if it is, then it will depend on the legality, the type of media, the type of protection...many new questions and variables to consider.

researching Nero, I find
Nero is one of the best piece of softwares available in the market for CD/DVD Burning Purposes, but it’s quite expensive. It’s bulky and comes with a lot of programs that you’ll never really use.
Why not try some freeware CD DVD Burning Apps applications that can serve as an alternative to Nero Burning ROM for your Windows PC?

Looks like it's designed for the Ubuntu community.

I need advice regarding win7.

I'll take a look at ImgBurn. Thanks, guys.

Nero is definitely not designed for Ubuntu...given that it is a Windows program. I'm not sure how you'd get that impression, but it is bulky, and it most certainly is not free like the others, so you are right about those observations.

are these recommendations for win7 4-bit ?

I looked up imgBurn and it seems like lots of 64-bit win7 users are having troubles with it.

Nero in general is bloated and slow. I occassionally use it, but it is still my old Nero 7 version. Anything above 7 and it was generally regarded as junk. It's a shame, because Nero was THE burning app for years.

Yes, all of those above apps are for x64. You'll find very little that doesn't support x64 these days, thankfully. Just go to the websites of the app you choose and grab the x64 version.

While Nero 9 free version comes with very few features, its size is still 54MB!

Jeez, all I wanna do is backup a DVD.

You still have to worry about the potential copy protection, so what kind of DVD is it?

As for Nero Free, it is still a huge, bloated app, with the same or less features than the other free apps.

ah, yes, my mistake. This is a new area for me, copying DVDs.
The original plays on my computer and does not indicate +R or -R.
How do I decide which format to copy to?

It doesn't matter - some very old dvd players don't work with +r.

I believe most macs can't handle +r either.

If you have a pc that is not ancient, both formats will be fine.

If it is copy protected - then clearly that is asking you not to copy it.

Has no-one ever told you that Nero 7 is not fully compatible with Windows 7, and Nero 9 is far better than 7 ever was.

I tried using N7 with W7 and was disapointed, on upgrading to N9 the speed came back, and like I said it was far better.

Complaining about things is OK if you are up-to-date, if you use out of date and incompatible applications thats your fault.

Wow, where to begin. First off, Nero7 may not list that it is officially compatible with Windows 7...but it works perfectly fine, at least for the apps I use out of the suite. It's common knowledge on any burning forum you read that Nero died after 7. That was it's last good, lean version. After that, starting with 8...it's been bloated.

I have no idea what "speed" you are referring to. Not once did I complain about Nero 7's speed. In fact, you are more than welcome to read up on the subject, or try them yourself...but Nero 7 is a much leaner, lighter app than any version after it.

Save your lecture for when you have your facts straight. Nero 7 works perfectly fine with Windows 7 x64. Don't believe me? Read up on the subject. Do yourself another favor and always remember that newer doesn't always equal better. Just because Nero 8, 9, and 10 have higher revision numbers...doesn't mean they are better than Nero 7.
