CDRW & DVDRW not working

Hi! Day 2 of my Win7 adventures and I'm enjoying the new OS. Few problems that I'm working on currently but the premier one is that both my CDRW (Lite-on 52x) and DVDRW (TDK) in Device Manager are throwing a Code 39. I've included a screenie. The PCI Input Device is likewise but is one of my few problems that I'm not concerned about and still working on. Strangely, both devices were working fine yesterday as I used them both to install some programs. Perhaps not so strangely they ceased working (though I didn't realize it immediately) after I installed Interview's WinDVD software Suite. Reading through these and many other forums I've deduced that its an issue with the cd-rom drivers that program installed and I've removed them, leaving only the Windows generic drivers. Still no happiness.

Reading through these forums I found a post detailing a fix to this sort of problem (Link here) however this did not resolve my problem. In fact it made it worse. Not sure what prompted it exactly but upon reboot Windows said there was an issue and could not load up giving me only two options. First was a system restore (thank god for these things) and just booting into Windows normally. I took the system restore...but am now wondering what would've happened if I traveled down the road less...traveled.

Long story short I intend to try the registry hack one more time and if prompted simply boot into Windows normally. If this does not work then I intend to reinstall Win7 and reformat my C: drive again. This isn't all that bad as all my files and programs reside on another drive. Before this happens though I'm throwing my plight out to the community in hopes there might be a more elegant solution...

Cue supportive community. :D

Hi and welcome to SF. thanks for filling in your system specs.

I think you have a driver issue. have you download drivers for the 3 devices that are unknown?

I've checked both Lite-On and TDK but neither have drivers. Lite-On has firmware updates, but I cannot apply it without the drive being detected by the update, which it cannot because of the driver issue. My understanding too is that both CDRW and DVDRW really don't need drivers per se as Windows should install default drivers.

Incidentally can you see my complete system specs by clicking on my login name? I had filled all that in. :D

I would get Build 7201 or higher. I thinks that will recognize the drives automatically.

Pardon my ignorance but how do I get a higher build than what I have currently? I was under the impression that 7100 was the highest available for the RC?

Yes, the only updates available are 31 optional updates consisting of the Win7 Ultimate Language Pack. By your question am I to infer that Microsoft will still be pushing thru updates even for the RC? I was under the impression (perhaps wrongly) that Build 7100 was it until the Retail release.

They are doing general updates, but those don't fix all the bugs & coding updates as the newer builds do.
