Europe won't pay more for Windows 7. Really!

A senior Microsoft executive has denied the company will increase prices for Windows 7 upgrades in Europe because of the ongoing investigation into Internet Explorer.
Microsoft will not offer an upgrade version of Windows 7 to users in Europe. Instead they will be offered the full version for the price of an upgrade. This is because the retail version without a browser will not be ready for October and an upgrade would likely leave a version of Internet Explorer on your machine.
In a letter to the FT today Bill Veghte said: "We will not have an upgrade version available in Europe when we release the new operating system. Therefore, we've decided to offer the full version of Windows 7 to all customers at the lower upgrade price. In the future we may have an upgrade offering of Windows 7 available in Europe, and at that time we would revert to differential pricing."

The company also admitted that its recent move to offer Windows 7 without a browser was taken without the prior approval of the European Commission. The Commission gave a rather frosty reception to that bit of grandstanding.
Tip of the hat to Computerworld and its entertaining report of its spat with Waggener Edstrom, Microsoft's public relations firm over this story.
And thanks to eBuyer which has let slip UK OEM prices - Windows Vista with Windows 7 upgrade form is £90.90 for the 32-bit version and £91.20 for the 64-bit version. ®
Europe won't pay more for Windows 7. Really! • The Register

For all the Europeans out there! Cheers!

you may think its the cost for the upgrade version but its not... just the full version! They did it because we have this crappy Version "E" stuff ... because you will not be able to upgrade vista to win 7 E because of the missing Internet Explorer.

on the 15th July you can pre-order Windows 7 Home & Professional E version from Amazon, supposedly the prices are to be £50 to £90 but we'll wait and see.

Remember though that the E version comes without a browser so you'll have to have the install waiting on a flash drive or something.

This just shows what a bunch of hypocrites the EU are. They threaten MS with action if they don't remove IE from the European versions of W7 and, now that they are doing so for the final release in Europe, the EU is still not satisfied.

What it does mean is that over here in the UK (I refuse to be called a part of Europe) we will be forced to use an OS that is crippled by its lack of a browser. I don't see what the problem about including IE in W7 is all about - afterall, MS don't force you to use it and provision already exists whereby you can install and use a different browser should you choose to do so.

If this is supposed to be for competition reasons, then why isn't the EU forcing MS to remove Paint, Notepad, Wordpad and a host of other built-in applications for which there are alternatives (I know that they have already tried this with Media Player - the N versions)? What about the EU going after the other OS manufacturers in the same way? We don't hear anything about that.

Racist - I don't think so. I'm thinking G2gCya is saying something along the lines of "If you want to make it so difficult to do business in EU, fine, I'll just not bother!"

I don't think that's a realistic position though. MS would be evaluating the total cost of doing business in EU against how much revenue/profit can be realized by doing so. If the benefits out-weigh all the associated costs then business will happen.

Yes it is.

As they do not have an "E" upgrade version ready for the worldwide launch on october the 22th, the preorder price in Europe is for full retail version of Seven, not for upgrade. And until the end of the year (time they need for the E upgrade version) full retail version will be sold at the same price that the upgrade version.

Thanks to the absurdity of the UE commission we will get Seven HP Retail for 49€ (68$ at this time)

PS: this is official pricing from MS. You just need to look european news websites ;)

Hope its true , We ( Europeans ) are getting a crappy deal as it is. By that i mean we are getting a late release of W7 due to "EU issues" in comparrision to the rest of the world.

I'm assuming the late release is due to the fact that the EU has to agree with the method Microsoft will implement to allow us to choose a browser. Possibly some kind of option screen on set up to download / install the Internet browser of your choice.

Charging us more would just be an insult , its not the end user at fault is it ?

£50 - £100 GBP depending on the version you wish to purchase sounds fair to me.

I have a question i hope someone can answer in relation to Technet downloads ? If i purchase a sub for Technet , What will stop me downloading the U.S version on the day its released and activating it with a key from Technet ?

It will not. TechNet will have ONLY the regular full version (and upgrade) so you can just download Windows 7 Xversion. E will not be on there. N probably will, but don't worry about that ;)
