ok, so I have wanted to make a wooden case for my computer for quite a while. i might get the stuff in and do it...

what i was thinking was to get two more power supplies in (yes, a PC with THREE power supplies) and get it starting up on an ignition chamber (thats found in cars).

car-key.jpg

am I mad? should I do it?

EDIT

Maybe I could get a board expert to make me a board that can make a "dash board" for it, to monitor fan speeds and stuff (using RPM counters and the leds)

Sounds like it might look cool. Be better if you had a car starting sound to play:)
Why would you need three PSUs though?

car sound would be good, but im going to use a USB project board that runs after windows has logged in.

Three PSU's : one for the motherboard, one for extras, one for even more extras. :) purely because I have three ignition starter points. (I, II, START)

Cars are moving away from keys and ignition cylinders. RF Transponders in keyfobs and a start button are going to be the future.

3 PSU's will be a waste and more problems than you think.
Even though the ignition has 3 steps, only the first two are constant, while the 3rd, the starter engage is a momentary style switch. It's only enableb as long as you keep the key turned.

True...

a waste, i will agree.. but I'm cool like that. the 3rd will be the one thats connected to the motherboard anyway. the momentary part of the switch will be hooked to the motherboards "Power" pins to fire the motherboard up...hence firing up the third power supply.

the first and second PSU's will be to take the load of extras like gpus, HDD's, DVD's, "sextras" (extras to make it look sexy)

I love the idea, but I also think three psu's are excessive.. If it were me, I would do it fancy like point 1 turns on my monitors and speakers etc, point 2 turns on my computer fans, and point 3 turns on the actual computer.

I like this idea...but it will require putting 250v through the keychamber...which I dont think is very healthy... seen as the chamber is designed for 12v (24 for trucks/lorries)

Edit

done a bit of research, and I came up with two projects for monitoring system stats with gauges, both very plausable due to having many usb ports and audio out ports.

Monitor with AUDIO
Monitor with USB

The green wire!

Thats what turns the PSU on and off.

Its nifty.
I can probably mod it for a PC too, I guess. So it will only turn on when you plug in this usb key.

I like this idea, too, and you've put a thought into my head...

In the days before ATX power supplies, most computer cases had a keyboard lock. It was usually a chrome switch with a key right on the front of the case.

I'm going to put an ATX board and power supply in an old case and attach the keyboard lock to the power switch input on the board so that turning the key will turn on the system. The big, obvious power switch on the front panel won't be connected to anything so hilarity will ensue when anyone tries to turn it on. :)

usually green wire, read the PSU manual first. if theres no green wire... check where the green wire is on another PSU and use that wire. :)

I know cars are moving away from keystarts, but i will not. I dont like the new method of

  1. walk up to your car
  2. *car unlocks*
  3. get in the car
  4. push button to start

just doesnt seem like "Getting into a car and driving" to me... wheres the fumbling around the keychain with house-keys, bike keys, car keys, shed keys bla-bla-bla? :P

getting a pc to start on "usb" is easy enough... just get a usb port from something that doesnt work, and rig the power headder on the mobo to two of the usb terminals. Then, make a usb "key" that has the jumper (two pins connected). plug it in, pc turns off. leave it plugged in, 5 sec later, pc off. if pc is crashed, plug it in and leave it for a hard off.

Why don't you go all the way and get the Mercedes key switch with rf fob. This way all you need to do is have the fob in the room and the computer would start with a button and if the fob is removed it won't, should only cost a couple of grand through the MB dealer if I understand their parts mark up !

I think i know what your thinking of. an immobilizer. if its not there, car wont start bla bla bla..
yeah...thats easy enough...build something that is a jumper.
hell, if you wanted to get creative, you could use the Android unlock on it (a panel with 4 rows, 4 columns of switches, and pc will only turn on if certain switches are ON

There is millions of ways of turning a PC on.... in the end of the day, so long as the power headder is shorted on the motherboard.... think of something that can stop and start electricity flowing..

... have fun. :) i always try to go cheap when i build... im a simple man who doesnt want a lot.. if i wanted a clever system, i'd build one. xD

I did have an idea of getting a filing cabinet (2 drawers high, wooden) to build into instead. it'd be easier.

Hey ~LordBob!

any hints/tips before i build?

Test it on your friends machine.
Just in case it doesnt work ;)
Good plan. Also, don't grab a live 120V line like I did.

Other than that, make sure you plan out what you want to do, make a list of how you are going to do it.
Make sure you have a way to mount things, and make it first so it doesn't turn out as crappy as mine did.

I have an INTEL Pentium 2 (the last one alive i think?) which I will use as a test subject. it doesn't know it yet.. so shh.. i don't want it to worry

first off, yours didn't come out crappy. I like it. im pretty fussy on PC cases... (I've been known to buy three per year)

It'll be easy not to grab a 120v line, we've got 250v over here in GB.

I will document my whole build and get it uploaded here for you to see. I'm going to be lazy (yeah..my middle name IS lazy) and start with this possibility WOODEN FILING CABINET because it will match my desk...and I don't have to make it.

This will also give me a chance to drill my way into what I would like to see.. (my own placement for buttons, leds, pots...)

I might use my laptop to do it Live on ustream.tv (link will come when i get the recording rig set up)
