Loss of Internet after running system restore

Situation:

This morning (Wednesday) my desktop computer brought in automaticly Tuesdays (26/04/11) set of patches, 6 in total for my machine. I turned the computer of for as I headed of to work and they installed on the shutdown. On returning from work the updates continued the install procedure on loading, but stuck at 0% for over 20mins. I decided to check the install time for this stage on my laptop 7pro x86 and it wizzed through in a few moments (laptop is a good 6yrs old). I figured the desktop was stuck and hit reset, every time it would get stuck at 0% on configuring the updates. Booted into safemode and ran system restore to the morning. Computer now loads up ok but will not connect to the internet. It would appear that its not getting an IP from the router.

What i've tried so far:

After running system restore I've removed the Anti virus (Eset Smart Security). Tried setting manual ip address and ping router and laptop, also tried ping from laptop to desktop, both ways destination unreachable. reinstalled network drivers, same fault occurs. Reset winsock (netsh winsock reset catalog), rebooted after. reset TCP/IP (netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt), reported ok, rebooted same fault. ran sfc /scannow, reports system file integrity ok. Unchecked IPv6, same issue occurs. Checked network cables on laptop, ok.

I've pretty much ran out of ideas now and would like to avoid reinstalling windows.

Do you have a previous restore point available? How about a backup image? Another thought...enter internet troubleshooter into start>search, and run the Windows Network Diagnostic.

I have tried go back to a restore point a few days earlier as well and its the same result. Unfortunatly though I don't have a backup image to roll back on.

Since I added it as an after thought, you may have missed my comment regarding the Windows Network Diagnostic above.

Check the Device Manager as you may have had a stall during install of newer Network Adapter driver.

Either way, update the Network Adapter driver or roll it back. Then rightclick Network icon in System Tray to Run Diagnostics if necessary.

I have tried a driver rollback, forgot to mention that, was running 2009 driver afte the rollback. Just updated to a new driver now 17/02/2011. Same fault. Running troubleshooting of the system tray icon, first issue it asks to reset router, tried that ok, router is fine though as the 2 other computers in the house are using it without issue (both 7pro x86 and x64). Skipped the router reboot option and comes up troubleshooting completed problems found. Local area connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration, not fixed.

Network adapters are both Marvell Yukon 88E8056, built onto the motherboard. I got the latest drivers from the Marvell website.

Does your router have a configuration utility? I'm no expert, but I think that you can configure the IP there. Your other systems would still be able to use the router without problems, because they are configured differently.

What exactly are we trying to configure in the router? A specific IP for the MAC address of the faulty computer NIC? If thats the case I would have thought that my earlier test of manualy entering an IP would have done the trick as it's bypassing the DHCP. The router though is a Netgear DGN3500

Like I said, I'm no expert, but the error that you mentioned said that there wasn't a valid local area connection IP. I would browse the router configuration for that. It has been too long since I dealt with this, but it seems that would be something like 127.0.0.1, but I may well be wrong. It may be better to wait for someone wiser than me to reply.

Read through the thread linked above, releasing and then renewing the IP through ipconfig doesn't work. On renewing the IP config it takes a couple of mins before reporting;

"An error occurred while renewing interface local area connection: unable to contact your dhcp server. request has timed out".

The 127.0.0.1 you mentioned is the loopback adapter on the computer, I can ping that ok. The Netgear router is 192.168.0.1 and is dishing out IP addresses on the 192.168.0.2 > 192.168.0.254 range. As the fault occured after a failed windows update I've fired up windows update and looked at the update history. The status for the 6 updatest that where downloaded and installed for the 27/04/2011 is as follows:

I shall repeat...I'm no expert, but the fact that the error mentions DHCP caused me to Google this:

It gives me the impression that DHCP can be detoured.

Well turned on my machine this morning and all is well. I can remember before I turned the machine of last night I went into netsh and reset TCP, ipv4, and winsock. Thanks for your help folks.

Solved by updating motherboard network driver from motherboard CD/DVD. Online without further actions.
