It’s hard to decide who are the biggest morons in this story: parents or daughter. 15 year-old Alexa Longueira was walking along Victory Boulevard in Staten Island when she fell into an open manhole.

Why didn’t she see it? You’re ahead of me here. She was too intent on tapping out a text message to notice the gaping gap in the sidewalk and just dropped straight on in. Idiotic, yes, but now Alexa’s parents are trying to blame someone else for their daughter’s stupidity while making a little money into the bargain. They’re suing the city.

The girl was checked out at Staten Island University Hospital and released.

Sewer line workers are supposed to cut off pedestrian access to work sites or at least mark them with warning signs.

Seems that they care more that it was gross than that it was improperly marked. The city is certainly at fault for that, but at the same time, they should be sueing the city for Incompetence (or neglect? I lost the word), not because it was gross.

Agreed. Once upon a time people would take responsibility for their actions, stupid or otherwise.
Now, in many cases, it's look for an excuse to sue as a means to make a quick buck. The law is an ass, often.
