Laptop Display on Monitor?

thomamon

New member
Just bought my wife a new Asus laptop, and at times she wants to have it hooked up to her monitor. When I plug it into the VGA port it works fine, but when I close the laptop it goes into sleep mode and she can no longer use it.

Is there a way to set it up so that she can have it hooked up to the monitor and have the laptop closed without it going into sleep mode?

Thanks!

What system does when lid is closed can only be set on Battery power option or plugged in power option.
If you set this option it will be set despite the fact whether external monitor is plugged or not.

Hi Thomamon!

Sure there is. You just have to change your Power Settings. Assuming it has Windows 7 on it (that's why you're here, right?) you just need to do the following:
1. Click Start orb
2. In Search box, type "Change what closing the lid does", hit Enter
3. Change the option to Do nothing under Plugged In (I assume it will be powered)

Hope this helps!

Thanks, that worked!

Is there anyway to get the resolution on the monitor to look better? I can't explain how crappy it looks, lol

I tried changing the resolution and such, but no such luck. The screen kinda looks soft on the monitor, but looks great if I use the laptop display.

Have you tried installing the driver for the monitor on the laptop? That can definitely fix the problem.

Think I figured it out...

I found a scaling option under Intel HD Graphice.

The options are:

- Maintain Display Setting
- Scale Full Screen
- Center Image

It was set to Maintain Display Setting, I switched it to Scale Full Screen. If I use Center Image it looks sharpest, but it doesn't take up the full screen.

Any other suggestions?

Can you post the system specs? The system model--Asus what?

Also, you're on the right track. It's got to be just a simple graphics problem. Keep poking around in the Intel graphics interface, and after you post your specs, we'll see what we can find.

Is the monitor using a non-native resolution?

It sounds like it's in clone mode and the monitor is using the laptops native display resolution.

The resolution seems to be more set for the laptop display then the monitor.

It has to stretch it out to fill up the entire screen. Every so often the screen gets distorted.

The resolution is currently set to: 1366 x 768
