My one RAM chip just stop functioning (some RAM parity error?). Now i have only 1 GB RAM(ddr2 pc2 6400/5300) in one slot and another slot is empty. I wanted to know if i could install another RAM chip in this slot (of probably higher MHz frequency or of ddr3 type) while maintaining compatibility with the existing one.

Possibly, though the faster one will drop down to the speed of the slower one.

RAM is cheap right now - why not replace both? :)

It's better to buy a RAM kit(or 2) of two identical modules. They're not too expensive these days anyway.

First off, you can not run DDR3 on a board that is configured for DDR2, shouldn't even fit in the slots, well I guess you can make anything fit with the right size hammer.

As stated, RAM is dirt cheap right now, just go get two sticks that are withing specs for the board in your notebook.

RAM parity is overrated. Encountering an error due to strange parity is unusual with modern RAM. I've ran crazy combinations of brands, speeds, and timings of both SDRAM, DDR, and DDR2. None of them have showed any signs of trouble when mixing.

It's a case of 'better safe than sorry' when it comes to RAM parity. Sure you can mix & match to some degree, but it's better to have the same size & type memory modules.
