Hello my name is john and im having a bit of a problem. it all happened a couple of weeks ago when i let my idiotic girlfriend borrow my external hard drive which ultimately led to it no longer working due to the usb port coming off.

i was trying to retrieve the data on it because my gateway p-78 series could when in the proper position detect the data on it. because the usb was no longer attached to it i saw a small shortage that shut my computer off..

although i was able to turn my computer back on i went into the device manager because my usb ports were no longer able to read external devices like cameras or my zune mp3. when i went into the device manager it stated that my usb devices (forgot which ones) where shut off to prevent harm to my computer...

i didnt think of it as much because my computer was working perfectly fine with the exception of the usb drives...so i turned them back on and restarted my computer and got black screen...

my computer turns on, i can hear the fan running and my computers keyboard seems to work also because i can turn on and off the lights on my computer by pressing fn+f3 but i cant automatically shut down my computer because the only way i can is by removing the battery...

please if anyone can help i would really appreciate it i really miss my laptop!!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it really sounds like you may have physically damaged the usb hub on the laptop's motherboard.
This may not be recoverable.
It would have been much easier to spend 15 dollars on a new external enclosure and just put the portable drive in it.
