Do I buy Office 2010 or try loading 2007?

New member
I have basic skills regarding problems and may need help if it goes wrong! I have bought a new computer and am setting it up.Internet and Antivirus all done OK.
I have original licensed discs of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 which I could load on this Compaq SG3 running Windows 7 Home Premium. I see other have had problems and am concerned that I am going to get glitches which eat into my time. Would it be better to buy (very reluctantly!) Windows 2010 or are the likely 2007 glitches easily resolved.

I've put Office 2007 on almost 2 dozen Windows 7 machines, most of them are Win7 Home Premium 32bit, but I installed them on about 6 64bit machines and no one has reported any glitches or issues to me.

What kind of glitches have you read about?

Both 2007 and 2010 work equally well on x86 and x64 - I use both versions daily and have never encountered a problem.

On my Windows 7 x64 PC Outlook 2007 doesn't always close properly and causes Windows to hang on shutdown. Office 2007 service pack 2 seems to be the culprit, outlook works fine before installing it but not after. When I close outlook I get the icon with a red x in the status bar next to the clock. I then have to launch it and close it again. There was something else that didn't seem to work right but I can't think of it right now. I gave up trying to fix it and went back to office 2003.

I have this new computer ( bought May 21st, this year ).
It's a 64-bit.
I installed my 32-bit Home and Student 2007 into it. No issues at all.

Just one reminder, new computers nowadays usually come with a pre-install MS Office either a trial version or a MS Office 2010 Starter which is not a trial version.
If your computer has a pre-installed MS Office, it is best you uninstall it first before you install the Home and Student 2007.

Most issues that I have seen with MS Office on win7 are on systems where multiple versions are or have been on the system.

This includes where only part of the suite, for example, the installation of Office 2010 and Visio 2007 has caused problems.

I have not noticed any real issues with any system that has just one version of office installed, this is true for 2003, 2007 and 2010

In addition I should add that as far as I can see there is no advantage in using Office 2010 compared to Office 2007. There is no new functionality, at least as far as how I am using it. Of course, I am mostly using PowerPoint, Excel, and Word. Other new programs that come with the suite nowadays I have not even tried and can't comment on them. But the three basic programs are robust and there is very little change between recent versions to warrant spending more money on them. At least as long as the files they produce can be read on other machines.

Your shutdown issues with Outlook may be due to an add-in. I have had problems with the iTunes Outlook add-in causing Outlook to hang and not shutdown. Go to your Outlook Options, navigate to add-ins and see which add-ins are installed. You can then disable them one at a time to determine which is causing your problem.
