Trying to play Blu-ray discs & cant get it to work. Tried VLC, no dice

I have a bluray player, just put a real disc in there & cant seem to get it to work.

I downloaded VLC & it still isnt working. Any ideas on what to try?

VLC gives me an error & tells me to check the Log, but I cant find the log?

What disc is it?

It's the only blu-ray disc I have. I just rented it from redbox. It's Shrek forever after (for the kid)

I just installed that codex successfully & it's still not playing in DAplayer?

I guess you can try the commercial programs then, they have 14 day and 30 day trials.

After you try either or both of the above, don't uninstall them and then see if the DAplayer and VLC work.

Download and install Shark 007 codecs Shark007.net - Windows 7 Codecs - WMP12 Codecs. If your OS is 64bit, you should also download and install the X64 components Shark007.net - Windows 7 x64 Codecs - WMP12 Codecs .

Next download and install MPC Home Cinema 32bit or 64bit as the case may be and only from the Tools section of Shark's website Shark007.net - Tools for Windows 7 codecs .

Open the Shark's Settings Application 32bit or 64bit as applicable to you, as an administrator. In the Settings application "SWAP" tab, check "Use FFDshow for VC1" (Disable Windows Media Foundation will automatically get checked)



For copy-protected BDs, you may also need to run the free version of DVDFab's Passkey Lite Passkey Lite -- Free and Lite version of Passkey for DVD & Blu-ray .(I haven't used it and so I have no idea whatsoever as to how effective it is.)

After all this, try to play your blu-ray disc with MPC Home Cinema.

EDIT 1: Rented discs are subject to abuse. Do make sure that the disc is playable on a hardware player.

These and other discussions in this thread should help you in deciding on the issue.

In case you decide to give it a try, please do go through the EULA (which we normally do not do and confirm that the installation of Ask Toolbar is indicated therein) before you accept.

In case you decide otherwise, your options will be togo with the trial versions of Total Media Theater 5 by Arcsoft or Cyberlink's Power DVD.

Today I could successfully play my home-made BD with the current version of MPC Home Cinema without any other codec packs installed. You may try this. http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/download-media-player-classic-hc.html

Remove other codec packs before installing new ones.

What happens if you try to use Windows Media Player?

Stay away form Shark's codecs unless you like drive by installs of toolbars and other malware.
How can that be recommended anymore?

You can get a 30 day free trial of PowerDVD11. No codecs or other crap to install.

Perhaps you are the first one to state that Shark's codecs installs toolbars and malware and should be shunned. Pray be specific and tell us which tool bar/s it installs without your acceptance and the specific malware.

I have been using Shark 007's codecs ever since Windows 7 was released and have not come across any such toolbar forced on me or any malware and I am not a kid.

It installs 2 toolbars with no option to opt out.
There is an opt out for weatherbug.
It changes your default search engine without your permission.
It installs windows live sign in assistant without your permission.
This is from the latest version from last week.

What is the other toolbar forced on you?

And what is the malware you found?

It installs 2 toolbars. Bing and Ask I think.
It may have installed more. As soon Winpatrol started barking with all the changes, I hit the reset button and restored an image I made just before installing this.
I call it malware because it hijacks your system without your permission.

Yep, It installs both those now.

I used to always use, recommend, and support Sharks codecs. But, sadly, I find a hard time doing so now.


Ask Toolbar is one thing I would never have on any of my machines. So that in itself is a deal breaker for me.

Weather Bug is optional, but there is no choice for Bing and Ask.
If you do not want them on your machine, do not use the codec package is the only solution.
Which is the route I took.

I understand he provides the packs for free by including those toolbars to help pay the bills, that being said an opt out would be nice. He does have some reg entries that I can confirm will prevent the toolbars from installing, check the links above.

Pertaining to the Ask Toolbar, on 10 Jun 2011 Shark 007 had indicated "If you were to use a current release, you'd see an opt out option during install." It is in the link provided by derekimo.

For Bing Shark007 had already provided the registry files to prevent it.

Honestly, considering the benefits brought about by his codec packs these had never bothered me to an extent of calling them malware and shun his codec pack altogether. Revo uninstaller is always there to uninstall the unwanted intrusions.

There is no opt out for ask in the June 20 release. If he said that he is lying.
So you would recomend this system hijacker/spyware?

I checked installing the latest Shark007 codec pack v2.9.0. Contrary to what Shark007 had stated it still installs ask toolbar without any option.

I would still not go to the extent of calling Askbar as system hijacker/spyware.(In fact, Ask Jeeves was one of my favourites in the early days )

By default these bars - both Bing and Ask - remain disabled in IE. (Though I knew these were present I never felt any ill effects, and I have not come to grief so far. My homepage has not been hijacked. My default search engine remains the same.)

As I had indicated earlier, if one is averse to these totally he may easily uninstall the two using Revo Uninstaller. No problemo.
