Where are restore point files stored?

i want to exclude the restore point files from defragmentation (Defraggler has that option). Where are the restore points stored?
I found a tool to make hidden files visible. There is some information on Google where XP stores the files, but it seems to be different in W7.

My reason for excluding that from defragging (and excluding my download and temp folders) is to speed up defragmentation. Those files ae in flux anyway and fast access is not needed.

BTW: how can I add a picture to my name in this forum??? I didn't find it in my account.
Edit: i found where i add the picture, but it doesn't show here :-(

Welcome to sf

By restore points Im assuming you mean the backup file and not the info abt it. the backup file destination is set up when backup is configured and if you go start>cpanel>backup & restore it will show you.

Rethe forum pic its in user cpanel if you mean your pic its uder edit user pic, if you mean avitar thats where you go.

Hope this helped

What I'm looking for are the large files the " system restore" creates.
Defraggler finds sime files and paths. But I can't see them, even with my little tool to make files visible and visible (I'm not sure it works)

what is the manual way to make hidden files and folders visible?

Restore point files are stored in the System Volume Information folder, which is a hidden system folder. How much goes in there is determined by your settings in the System Protection pop-up which you can access from the System Properties (right-click on Computer) or from CP / System. I recommend you don't mess with this folder :D.

But if you must, use the Folder Options settings to let you see them.

DJG: I think you explained how I change how much diskspace I allocate to " restore" .

The amount is not my issue, what I want is to see where those points are so I can exlude them from being defragmented (Defraggler has the option to exlude folders from defragging) So:
- where are they stored (folder, path)
- how do i make them visible?

Thanks

And I answered your question: in the System Volume Information folder. It's at the root of the drive - sorry forgot to mention that - and normally hidden - read again :).

I could make all files and folders visible. but I some how still can't follow your insttructions in finding the folder where the restore point data are stored.
You said "It's at the root of the drive", what does tha tmean? should i either see it in the " C" drive as a folder? There is nothing like that. Or shoudl I see that in the " system" (ctrlp-->system) somewhere? under which exactly?
Under system properties --> startup and recovery... there isn't really anything that shows me in which folder that would be.

mmmhhhh
thanks for your patience

djg is saying its here but this folder is locked and only 360Mb so i dont know what the advantage would be. If you mean the backup its somewhere else

In "system restore" it tells me I have 30 GB for restore used. (I set it to 32 GB max) So i guess what I'm asking for, where are those 30 GB stored?
all the folders that I found are smaller than that.

2 HDD in RAID 1 (so it is one drive to Windows). I have 2 partitions (one for all my data, one for the system installations. That I suppose is where the restore data are. It didn't ask me at all.

1. Open the Control Panel
2. Set the view to "small icons" - you'll see all CP functions.
3. Click on Folder options - this will open a pop-up window with three tabs.
4. Click on the View tab.
5. You need to uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". It will confirm, 'cause you're being naughty :D.
6. Say Yes.
7. Click OK.

Now if you go to the root of any drive, e.g. "C:\" using Win Explorer, you can see there's a folder there called "System Volume Information". That's where those files are. But Windows gets really annoyed if you try to muck in there :).

It absolutely does which is why its locked. teh only way around that is to take ownership, and change the props. Not recommended.

OK, now i found it. I thought the "show hidden fiels and folders"would already take care of it.
I now can see the system volume information folder. However, access is denied and it shows as 0 kb in size. The next thing to try would take ownership but I now stop here and don't do anything with it. Doesn't seem to be worth the trouble to save me some defragging time with the risk to mess things up when too many folders are visible. If needed, I now know how to do it.

So, many thanks for the patience and advice.

Finding the Restore Points

I have seen a lot of run around but this is the Top of the Line Number 1 Winner of all times! If you ccan't understand his problem, let me explain. He is going to run some kind of system cleaner-perhaps CC Cleaner or AVG PC Tune Up. He doesn't want his restore points wiped out, so he wants to add them to the "Exclude" List.
I found this because I am doing the same thing and don't want to lose my restore points either! I don't won't want to "mess with the folder", I want and he wants to protect it. I have lost all my Restore Points too many times and would like to find it to so I could add it to the "Exclude" list, so they will be there if I need them.
If you know how to find them surely you can explain it clearer than that! I can't find them either. I used the folder options and clicked "Show Hiddem Folders" but still can't find them. You guys are so far ahead of some of us that you start us out at the senior level. Some of us are still KinderGardeners! Take it easy and let us learn a little at a time.
Just tell us how to find the location so that they can be added to the EXCLUDE LIST and don't get wiped out

Harmie,

You have posted to a thread that is very old.
To get help, you should start your own thread.
To me it looks like you want something different than the OP.

From the OP:
Where are restore point files stored?
i want to exclude the restore point files from defragmentation (Defraggler has that option).
My reason for excluding that from defragging (and excluding my download and temp folders) is to speed up defragmentation. Those files ae in flux anyway and fast access is not needed.

Finding the Restore Points in Win 7 Ultimate

In folder options, under the veiw tab check the "Show Hidden folders and Files. You must also click the nect 3 tabs to get it to show the System Volume Folder. There is no neeed to take ownership, that will lead to serious problems. Now that it is shown, open your system cleaner program and click on browse. Go the the C:\ and add it to the excluded secton. That is what just worked for me!
