Used Live mail without signing in to live-ID. All contacts were stored locally.Fine.
But then i signed in to Live -ID out of curiosity. Decided that this was not what i wanted, but contacts are not available unless i sign in.

How can I go back to the old situation and have my contacts locally stored?

Tried simple uninstall/reinstall: no succes (i kept the messages in the process).

Will the following approach work?
  1. Export messages and contact to PC
  2. Uninstall Live mail, including messages
  3. Remove Live mail folders if still there (maybe with Revo?)
  4. Do system restore to a date before i signed in for the first time
  5. Import messages and contacts
Are there alternatives?
Will a system restore alone do the trick? Clearing a certain folder of deleting a key in the registry?

Hi Colenbrander, go to Programs & Features, Win Live Essentials select repair. If you have your contacts saved as a .CSV (comma separated values) file, try importing them into WLM.

Thanks, but this did not solve the issue.

Maybe I was not clear enough about the problem: after signing in once, Live mail will no longer show contacts after signing out. This is by design. Question is how can I go back to the original situation where the contacts were visible in Live Mail without having signed in?

Your post was clear enough, thats why I thought you may be able to import them. Never tried doing it myself.

Sure, that is possible. You can also prevent in the mail options that logon takes place automatically, but i'd like to go back to the old situation as it was before the first logon.

There are two separate contact lists in WLM: one when you sign in and another when you don't. So when you sign out your former "not-signed-in" list will return. Only the signed-in list is backed up automatically at the "contacts.live.com" website.

Yes, I know that. In fact there's a third separate contact list: windows contacts.

So the problem is not so much the contactpersons (via import/export you can fill each list from an other, but the reference to the email account. I want to restore the situation as it was before my first sign in to the hotmail account.

I was addressing this question "How can I go back to the old situation and have my contacts locally stored?" Since you already knew about the 2 WLM contact lists (the Explorer list is not part of WLM) then I guess I just don't understand your original question.

I wanted to completeley eradicate any hotmail connection / connection data from that PC. The owner was satisfied with less, so I just copied the online addresses to the two local databases and changed the live mail connection options tot do not sign on to live services.

Thanks for your suggestions and sorry for the confusion.
