How to install downloaded 3rd party icons !

Hi everyone,

I seem to have inadvertantly changed the '' Values not yet set '' ar the right hand side of the default icon to '' the path I had chosen for my third party folder ''. The problem is that now I can't seem to go back and erase. How do I Change the '' Values not yet set '' back to the way it was before in order that I can write down the path to my third party folder in the right place ( at the right hand side of the '' 3 '' ?

But as far as changing groups, I am unaware of how that may be done. Perhaps with a 3rd party program like Change Folder Icons

In Windows 7, the folder icons are per class ... so a particular look for the folder icons is possible ; and that particular look is a combination of 5 different icons . For details, see http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/144807-folder-icon-change-default-icon.html .

But if you Disable Thumbnail Preview , you can apply the tutorial Folder Icon - Change Windows 7 Default Folder Icon , and can apply any folder in any place .

Hi Ace, I realy hope this message get's to you, i'm still not use to using the forum's format. Anyway...

I seem to have inadvertantly writen the '' The place i chose on my computer for my folder icon file '' ( underneath the data column ) at the right hand side of the '' Default '' folder, instead of writing it at the right hand side of the '' 3 '', therefore switching the '' No values yet set '' to '' The place i chose on my computer for my folder icon file ''. The problem is tha I can't seem to erace it. I even looked up information on restauring the registery; I'm suppose to click on '' start '' ( démarrer ) in the edit section but there is no such option...?

I also forgot to specify that the the folders I downloaded where actualy a group of many design folders ( each of wich had a filled folder version and an empty folder version. They where also .Bmp I beleive. This confused me because they did not mention this in the '' how to change the default user folder tuorial '' I therefor decided to only take one fo the empty version folders and put it in a different folder which would then become my chosen file to change my default folders.

I assume you are going through the tutorial Folder Icon - Change Windows 7 Default Folder Icon . You need a .ico file to add an icon . Are you sure that your download is a .bmp ? that is not an usual situation... generally they are made as either .ico or .png. Whatever it may be, you may try IcoFX - The Free Icon Editor to convert it it ico.

Hi Arc,

thank's for the advice. I have now converted the image folders in to .ico files. It Worked! Oh and by the way,you where right, the images where indeed .png ! There only seems to be a minor glitch with the viewing of '' the red folders ( both empty and full version) '' I can only view them in small sizes I think it is. They wont go bigger like the others will. Oh well.

The next step now I guess is to be able to back track my steps and correct my mystake in the regestry before attempting to do anything else ! I would realy, greatly apreciate any help you could give me, cause right now i'm blocked untill I can fix this ! The last thing I wated to ask was '' what does a pair of full/empty folders have to do with anything '' I will nevertheless take a look at that other link you wrote to me about, mabe it will give me some answers as well ''

After going through the other links, if you need any further assistance, just let us know .

In the mean time I am telling you two facts .... first, by registry editing, you can change the folder view to a static folder , and the icon size limits the view size. For best result, you need an icon of at least 256x256 resolution.

Second, actually a folder icon is a combination of five different icons ... not a single or a pair.

Hi Arc,

I succeeded in reparing my own error in the registery and have successfully downloaded the two tools they where refering to in the link you had sent me on '' How to Change Windows 7 Default Folder Icons using Resource Hacker ''. However, I don't know where to extracte the files ? When I right click and chose select all I then have the option to '' Extracte to the specified folder ''. Where do I create that folder and do I have to give it a special name ? I'm not use to '' Unraring files, folders or programmes ''.

Charles, you can extract files on desktop. BTW, what are you extracting? At which step of the tutorial you are right now ?

Hi Arc,

I was finnaly able to download an unzipping tutorial on '' Youtube '' and have succeeded in extracting all the files of both tools ( each in their own respected folders ) and have send both those folders inside a master Folder by the name of '' Extracted Files Folder '' which I created on my desk.

I am now at the step of '' Creating an Image Backup of my computer '' as well as a copy of my files.

That's where I'm at ...

Saying again, you need five (four actually) versions of an icon .... front , back, closed and open (both are the same) and work . I hope your downloaded icons have all the versions .

Hi arc,

I will attempt to send you an attachement where you will be able to see my downloaded folder icons for yourself. As you can see below, ther is a full and empty version. Can these folder Icons be used, with some manipulation of the images of som sorte, or do I liiteraly have to get some others folder icons somwherelse ? Could they be used for some other purpous ? Please let me Know !

Lovely beautiful icons, Charles . But using with the tutorial Folder Icon - Change Default Icon , they are not proper . Here is an example of a perfect set of icon groups used as folder icons by default ...

Hi Arc,

I am confused as to the difference in between both your's and Brink's tutorial. What is the deffinition of '' A Static Folder '' ? Does it mean it can only be viewd but not opened, or does it have to do with a particular class of folders ? I also have heard (or read rather) of the term '' Live Folder ''. What about Softwear folders or personnal document folders ? Which of these types of folders are considered either '' Live '' or '' Static '' ?

Charles mate,

A live folder is a folder class which gives you different looks at different state. These are ....
1. Closed/Open .... it reveals a blank folder icon .
2. Having documents in it .... it shows the thumbnail previews
3. Having subfolders in it ..... it displays a folder containing folders .

On the contrary , a static folder is a folder class displaying the same folder structure throughout the system , whether it contains anything or not (like those of windows XP).

Usually , windows 7 folder icons are per class .... so all (in C:\Program Files or in my documents) folders are live folders in it . But you may make them static by disabling thumbnail preview .

Hi arc,

It's getting there, I just want to be shure to find the wright set of folder icons this time before I do start your tuorial.

I went on Deviant art and searched live folders under windows 7 but I found that even the so called live folders almost all have something vital missing which makes me wonder if they would viable at all. Some so called live folders are realy beautifful, but they are presented as ( empty/full with no indication whatsoever as to having a front and back version of them ) alot of these so called live folders seem to be missing something out. Is it problematique ? Can certain folders be copied and tweeked somehow in order to create all the four different folder states needed in order to be recognised by the system ?

Hi Arc,

I looked at he icon folders you mentioned and it is apearent that the open (empty) folder is built by a combination of the front side and back side folder; while the full size folder speaks for itself (no problem with that one). That does not however answer anything.

On step 3 of your tutorial you clearly talk about three distinct types of folder icons. 3 and 4, 5 and 6. Yet the screen shot below clearly shows only one type of folder, namley 6 empty folders! Why ? How can you possibly change in to 3 different type of icon folders with one type (empty) ? Unless the system can accept an empty folder for an open folder (obviously), an empty folder as a closed folder, an empty folder as a back side, and finaly an empty folder for a front side. Is that it ???

Change both 3 and 4 with the same open folder icon, 5 with the back side icon , and 6 with the front side icon

I thought the statement was clear .... and the screenshots shows only an example of one of those. It is not to be misunderstood that all are to be changed with empty folder. It states which one is to be changed with which one .
