Test your memory. Best method is to run this overnight and get 5 or more passes out of it.

sadly given the completely random nature of the crash reports I'm thinking memory for the moment.

I get a windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation at 75% for the sfc /scannow

that is not a good sign, run the command in the same way from safe mode and see if it can complete.

it completed in safe mode
im going to go ahead and run memtest now
edit: running memtest now. on my first pass i got two errors.
when memtest finishes will there be some sort of log i can post here? or should i just say what those errors are now?

yeah go ahead and follow through with the memtest then.
All of the below assumes you already ran memtest and it came back without errors.
If it failed in normal windows mode and completed in safe without errors. Something is still going on.
Use msconfig to clean up your startup items too.
the alarm clock should go, you can do that using the task scheduler anyhow.
Finally temporarily remove avast and see if things improve.

heya i know you said to let it run for 5 passes, but since I already have errors in passes 0 and 1, im guessing i dont need to wait that long anymore.
so its likely a motherboard or memory problem?
also, i've already removed avast prior to the sfc scan and installed MSE instead
and i usually uncheck all the unnecessary programs in msconfig every time i install new stuff

that would seem to be the case, if you have more than one memory stick you can try testing them seperately and in different slots on the motherboard to narrow it down.

is it possible that overheating is causing the problems? the bsods only started happening once the weather got hot.

Well ram does eventually fail. Sometimes it will last a year or two, sometimes it will last for 15 years. There really is no way of knowing.
The heat could be a indication of a heat problem, the temperature change also could have just been the change that killed it. There really is no way for me to put forth any futher information not having direct physical access to the computer myself.
