I am going to upgrade my laptop from 4GB of RAM to 8GB of RAM.

I'm wondering what RAM you guys think I should get:
Corsair
or
G.SKILL

Also, should I just buy 4GB of one of those brands and run them along side the factory RAM, or should I buy x2 of of one of those brands instead so I'm running two of the same brand instead of one of those brands with the factory RAM?

I've got a Dell Vostro laptop with 4GB Corsair RAM. Works great. Also have a Sony Vaio with 8GB G.Skill and it's great. I'd go with the best price and definitely get a matched pair.

Newegg.com - g.skill 204 pin 8 gb

I downloaded Speccy and it shows my RAM as 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 532MHz...so I think I'd buy the 8GBs...

Okay on the Amazon link for my laptop, it says that it has 4GB of Ram, 2 slots. On speccy it shows that I have four slots, and two slots available...how is that possible? I have two SPD modules.

Also, the DRAM frequency is 531...this is probably wrong, but since I have DDR3 ram, does that mean the total frequency is like, about 1600 or no? That seems high for a factory set of RAM to me. NVM about that part, it says 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 532MHz...doesn't that like, suck? Compared to like 1333?

Unless your notebook is an exception, it probably has 2X2GB memory modules from the factory. If that is the case, you'll need to get 2x4GB when you order.

NVM, realized just you multiplied it by two, so it's 1033 Mhz. I think I'll just buy 2GBs of RAM.

If you already have 4GB (2 slots, each with 2GB installed), why would you buy another 2GB? You don't have any extra slots according to the manufacturer's specs.

I don't know the significance of the -X4 suffix, but everything seems to indicate that you have only 2 DIMM slots.

Buy the 2X4 GB kit.

The good news is that if you don't mix RAM, you won't have to worry about the sets causing compatibility issues.
