MS updates corrupt drivers, files, and apps

Newbie here! Just installed a few MS security updates and for the third time I have driver, application and software malfunctions. Touch-pad: just moving the cursor causes the open window to re-size, dialog boxes open and close for no apparent reason. Function Keys: none work except one that causes the menu bar to hide then reappear. All my restore points wiped out, even though I had plenty of hard disc space allocated and left free. So I cannot restore!!!
The last time I downloaded security updates, my music files ended up all messed up. 340 songs in one file with no information as to album or song name.
This is the third time these types of problems have occurred. I am getting tired of restoring this Toshiba back to out of box condition.
I am just letting off steam. No way to fix but to do a wipe.
Microsoft if the best sales agent for Mac Book.
If anyone actually has a suggestion including "Nuke" Seattle, I am open.

Coincidentally, I just answered a question similar to yours in this thread. Try the solutions I've quoted below and post back if anything improves.

I also read that the Fn keys not working can be a malware problem. If it is, download and install both:

and do a full system scan on both.

No malware; no restore points since the MS7 updates wiped them all out. Yes these
problems discovered after updating. After installing the Service Pack 1 I had to do a system wipe. Service Pack messed up so much stuff, including deleting all restore points then, also. Well I forgot to set Updater to only update when I allowed it to and Service Pack 1 & 2 installed. Nothing but problems since. Since F8 not work, I cannot get to the Advance Boot Options menu. Yes, I did create "repair disc" set, 6 4.7 GB discs. I did not get any MS discs with machine. These are repair discs I created using Toshiba Recovery Media Creator. Thanks for the help. bluelacy

Hmmm... All I can think of at the moment is too either reset or uninstall the security updates.

Or a Clean Install. Just remember to backup to an external drive first.

This sounds like a very odd problem - thousands of people perform the same updates you do and don't have any of the problems you are experiencing. Lets see if we can get to the bottom of this.

Firstly, can you follow this tutorial to upload your system specifications for us to look at:

I get MS updates about every week not counting the daily AV updates and have never had a problem so something else is going on with your machine. How much free disk space do you have? Windows will purge restore points when it needs room. Maybe you didn't reserve enough space. Run "SFC /SCANNOW" first as Jaidynm suggests and lets see what that turns up.

Service pack 2?

I suggest you take a deep breath & start afresh...

1. Clean Install Windows 7

2.Re update settings -
I suggest you change them to notify you but let you choose to download.
Do a few at a time only. Tis then easier to troubleshoot problems if they present.
{Leave SP1 for a later date.}
Always make sure you have a current system restore point prior to downloading anything.

3. When you are sure all is " normal" with your computer proceed to the next step below.

4.SP1.
Win 7 SP1.

Steps to follow before you install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 from the Microsoft Download Center
(Revised 08/16/11 )

* Update your device drivers to the most recent Windows 7 device drivers from your computer manufacture's support web site (for your specific make and model)

* Start by installing the chipset/motherboard driver followed by the remaining available drivers.

* Run the SFC /SCANNOW command. This will check and repair if necessary any critical Windows system files.
Click on Start/All programs/Accessories then
Right click on Command Prompt option and select 'Run as administrator'.
At the command prompt enter: SFC /SCANNOW

* Run the System Update Readiness Tool:
Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

Hopefully you can save what is dear to you and do a full complete clean reinstall and a full format of your drive.

MS7 Windows Firewall, CCleaner.

Carwiz: Yes, others have had very similar problems with MS7 updates. Check other forums. Corrupted music files, driver mal-functions, application problems.

Zigzag3143: Oh, Yes, MS7 Office Service Pack 2, and PowerPoint Service Pack 2. Getting rid of Service Pack 1 seems to have restored my Function Keys, and Touchpad.

JMH: Going to have lunch, then Repair Disk Install.

Thanks everyone! Backed up system on Western Digital 1TB Essential SE, yesterday. Have a 2TB Seagate, with "Memeo" backup software. The software sucks. Took 11 hours to do the same backup that took 2 hours on the Western Digital with their proprietary Smartware. The Memeo software was corrupted by updates and does not work anymore and Memeo cannot get me a copy that will either. Thanks again, Bluelacy

I do think that you and computers don't mix. Perhaps you should consider some time apart?
