Can you boot Win 7 from a Ide/Sata to UBS adapter?

I just got my new Vantec IDE/SATA to 2.0 USB Adapter installed. I use it on my laptop to give me extra storage space.. or plan to.. this drive already has a good copy of Win 7 installed and i'd like to boot into it from the USB adapter so it will be easier for me to find out what i need to back up.

I did try to boot from USB and windows does start to load then crashes.. I don't know if it's due to the Vantec unit or if I just need to repair the MBR on the drive. The drive has been sitting in a safe place for about 8 months not being used.

There is a way but its not worth it if you ask me, Use the Drive as storage or send it to me, Ill use it.

Why isnt it worth it? It would be worth it to me even if it ran slow.. it would accomplish the task of helping me see whats installed on it so i can make choices.

Cos you going to have to Lug a Harddrive with you when you go out and about, but if you realy wanted to do this your have too change the Boot devise in your Bios too usb.

Hold on a darn second, Are you saying that your Windows 7 on the Drive is from another PC and that your trying to load it on a Different PC.

Yep.. the drive used to be in my desktop which is no more ( RIP ) I already have bios set to boot from USB.

I see your point.. perhaps drivers issues? The desktop was an Intel and this machine is a AMD.. perhaps it might work if I used safe mode.. Hmm..

Yes this may be a good idea to goto safe mode, but you may still get BSOD.

Nope.. didn't solve my own problem but it was worth a try - still crashed.

It's a moot point now anyway.. I just went through all the files and backed up what I thought I needed the old fashioned way.
