As Microsoft announced USB 3.0 support in Windows 8, I don’t think I was the only one thinking: “But what about Windows 7?”

The promise from Microsoft is that all over 10 billion USB devices will work with USB 3.0 when connected to Windows 8 computers.

Backwards compatibility covers compatibility with current full, low, and high speed devices down to the plugs, revealed Dennis Flanagan, the Director of Program Management for the Devices and Networking group.

“Perhaps the most important aspect of USB 3.0 is the expectation that customers have of USB: it’s just USB3 so it should just work, right? Each and every USB device, low, full, high, and SuperSpeed, has to work in Windows 8. That's our focus while also delivering the most robust and reliable USB stack,” Flanagan stated.

At the same time, users will undoubtedly want to plug USB 3.0 devices into machines running Windows 7 and earlier, and have the technologies work seamlessly together.

I must be in a small group....maybe? I'm not looking to use another version of Windows for at least 2 or 3 years. I just don't see the need to push past 7 so quickly...:confused:

If we do eventually get support for USB 3 in Windows 7 you still need to have a modern motherboard that supports USB 3 or buy a USB 3.0 PCI Card

Good, I'm not upgrading to 8.o they finally have a OS (Win7) that they mastered and instead of releasing service packs up to beyond previous Windows which I believe the max was three service packs, Microsoft goes and releases another OS. The only way I would upgrade is if they sold it for $30 max which I highly doubt for Win7 users.

No need to rush, Windows 7 will be around for a while.

Consumer, Hardware, and Multimedia products

Windows 8 appears to be very techy OS, good to know some of those features will appear soon in Windows 7 SP2...
Manufacturers have since a year now their USB 3.0 drivers ready, PCMCIA or PCI card are also available for some of them. I'm not beta testing Windows 8 at the moment because it needs particular PC (surface, multi-touch screen...).

For what it's worth . . . . . .

I just built up a nice little HTPC with a ZOTAC ITX motherboard. As many new motherboards, it has some USB 3.0 ports. I did have to install their driver to activate the ports in Windows 7 SP1. Since I don't have anything that's USB 3.0 to plug in to it, I can't yet appreciate the 10X performance increase. :D As expected, these new ports are USB 2.0 compatible.

from all the information available 8 will run on even older hardware than 7 does now. this means that non touch screen pc's and laptop's will run 8 without any problems.

That's because i need at least:

1. A computer or monitor that supports Windows Touch (at least 2 touch input support required)

3. 1 GB of system RAM

4. 600 MB available hard disk space

5. 128 MB 3D video card with Hardware Textures & Lighting

7. Internet access required for Microsoft Surface Globe

Windows 8 will install on a computer with no touch screen, it has two desktops, one for tablets with touch screens and one for a standard desktops and laptops like most of us use today.
If you have a touch screen monitor for your desktop computer or a laptop with a touch screen you can use either.

If I recall correctly, you can use a mouse on the touch screen version of the desk top.

MS did not leave anyone out as a potential user.

Looks like the same things that I've read.

The ribbon in Office 2010 can be hidden by the arrow on the upper right side, I would think the Explorer ribbon will be the same.
