Media Center "deleted" all my media files

On Windows 7 I installed the xbox 360 extender using Media Center, all my media files show up, but after exiting the extender, all my media files do not show anymore on their default windows folders for Pictures, Videos, and Music.

Re-enter Media Center, and I am able to see all my media files, but unable to reach them through my PC, even after exiting again, and using my PC normally.



1- Advance searched my files to no avail, restored WMP library to no avail, restarted several times to no avail.

2- Used old Vista tricks in regedit to no avail, files still don't show up, they only do when I start the extender, and I see them through the extender only.

3- Restored to previous point in history on Windows to no avail.

4- Disabled WMP and WMC in Windows services and features, and re-enabled them, to no avail.


Could someone please help me?

Try Recuva - Standard .... see if those are anyhow deleted from your system .
If those are deleted, recuva can gut those things back .

Hi, thanks for the suggestion, but as you see, the files are still there, not erased, but blocked out.

I figured a temporary solution by going to that Pictures/Videos/Music folders, and clicking on "Share with" would let me see, and use the hidden files:



But it would not work all the time.

I don't have an antivirus, and I'm the only Administrator on the account, showing hidden files from Folder Options isn't related, so I can't figure out what exactly I have to do in order to be able to avoid doing that.

I'm sure it has to do with permissions, or some regedit tweaks, but I can't figure out that mechanism.

So your files are there, but not accessible ? What does it say when you try to open it ? Is it saying that you dont have permission to access those files ? If so, it is really a permission issue .

Thank you for your reply, I'm sorry I forgot to mention that I already have tried taking ownership of the folders or files themselves before. I can do it through CMD (commands), but it didn't seem to make any change .

The "Share with" option allows me to see and use the files, the problem is that it works sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't, also, WMC, as far as I know, should ONLY hide the files while its being used by WMC, not after it was closed.

I think the problem is not file permissions, but permissions in the network, and shared folders, oh and my firewall is off, and on, and off trying to see if it helped, but no.


If someone knows how Windows Media Center handles libraries and permissions, please let me know All I want is to be able to use my files after WMC is closed (even disabled it through services.msc didn't work).
