Pricing of RAM to Plunge, Analyst Says

About time it went down some......

The price of DDR3 memory used in laptops, desktops and servers will drop over the next two months as memory companies try to clear out excess inventory in a slowing PC market, IHS iSuppli said on Monday.

The average selling price of DDR3 RAM with a 2-gigabit density will reach $1.60 later in the third quarter, down from $2.10 today, said IHS iSuppli in a research note. The price of DDR3 DRAM was around $4.70 in the third quarter a year ago, when the market had not saturated and adoption was growing to replace DDR2 memory, its predecessor.

The price could plummet further to $1.25 in the fourth quarter, said Mike Howard, senior analyst for DRAM at iSuppli.

A shortfall in PC demand has softened DDR3 memory pricing this year, and PC makers are unwilling to add more memory to computers as they try to increase profitability in the low-margin PC market, Howard said. Some memory makers will move excess inventory into the market rapidly, which could lead to a price drop.

"It's a double whammy," Howard said. "PC growth has slowed down and users aren't demanding more memory."

The world's top DRAM makers include Samsung, Hynix Semiconductor, Elpida Memory, Micron and Nanya, some of which are having yield and supply issues that are contributing to the price plunge, iSuppli said.

About 6 months ago I bought 8GB (2x4GB) G.Skill for $65. Thought it was a great price. Now Newegg has Corsair 2x4GB for $28.99 after rebate. And free shipping too.

I would buy some and stash it but It is hard to tell what you are going to use. I am waiting on the Ivy Bridge. I guess it would be an Asus socket 1155. Any guesses as to what might match it say 12GB enthusist?

Ivy Bridge will be a 1155 socket, it appears to be able to be put on a P67 and Z68 platform, also the new Z75 and Z77 platforms.

The DZ77RE will support for the Thunderbolt interconnect, if that interests anyone.

They will use DDR3 1600 RAM, of coarse they will be able to run higher MHz RAM also.

This may be good for me since the RAM kit I bought is apparently incompatible with my board. I checked Crucial today and they have come 8 gig kits for 52 dollars! Except that kit has a CL of 9 with 1333Mhz frequency, may be a deal breaker.

Try to find RAM specifically for your AMD motherboard, Intel RAM doesn't work well on AMD boards.

Some say Intel and AMD, these are risky at best, they will be better on one of them, but not both.

Check for sales at the usual suspect sites, there are some great deals.

Isn't it supposed to be LGA 2011?

The LGA 2011 will be Sandy Bridge-E (Enthusiast) with the X79 Express Chipset, then Ivy Bridge-E which will have a new chipset.

The LGA1155 is Sandy Bridge (no 'E') which will be replaced with Ivy Bridge (also no 'E')

I am running Crucial 4gb (2x2gb) 1333Mhz rated at CL6 and the replacements are now CL7. It looks like most if not all 4gb sticks are now all CL9 so it will take a major speed bump to make up the CL difference. My sticks are rated for 1.8v and it looks like most of the newer chips are at 1.5v or 1.65v so I think this is why the CL has gone up. My next build will probably be a Bulldozer which will handle DDR3 1866 as default so the CL9 should be OK. Since it is predicted for Ram prices to fall in the 4th quarter it looks like perfect timing for a new Bulldozer build. Everytime I work on the wife's laptop I complain how slow it is and she is now convinced. So I can now build me a new rig and give her my old rig which to her is super fast. Things are a lot easier when you lay a good foundation.

Of these two the G-skill is by far the better memory, the XLR8 was nice to work with.

I don't see any advantage with Socket 2011 it will only come in the common 4 cores and newer 6 cores which you can buy today in socket 1366. I highly doubt that a 1366 - 3.4 Ghz Hex core will be outdated in 3 years, scratch that 4 years, quite possibly 5 years.

$50 per meg? I remember when 256 K - (that's kilobytes for you younger folks who never saw anything that small) went for about $400.00 CDN.

On topic, for those looking for some good RAM that works flawlessly in an AMD rig, I've always had good luck with the Mushkin Blackline series. I've got 8GB of DDR3-1600 in my rig, and I haven't had so much as a hiccup in over a year. If I remember right, the CL is around 6 or 7 for these babies, and they run with 1.63V. (I just checked, the timings are 7-7-7-20 @ 1600)

I had some of their DDR2 RAM in my old rig, and I pushed it pretty hard and it never failed. The wife has them now, but she made me slow them down. lol

I will use the Mushkin RAM to recommend to people with AMD RAM issues.

A lot of people are having serious issues with running RAM at 1600MHz on AMD CPU/motherboards.
What settings did you use?
Any 'special' tricks?
