Can't move folders with files, but can move files

I am attempting to move folders and files around, doing a little organization on my HDD. However if I attempt to move the loaded folder I get the error message " The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program." However I have no other programs open, thinking it was some hidden process, I killed a bunch of processes in Task Manager, one's I didn't recognize, or I knew were safe to kill.

Not sure if this may be an issue, but my mobo recently went belly up and I had to replace it (with the same type DP67DB for DP67DB) but everything else remained as is- this is the first time I am messing with the files on the "new" machine. Is it possibly an ownership issue, and if so how do I resolve this?

Okay did the system scan - didn't find anything. I would paste in the text but can't figure out how to copy it... but the final message was "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

I don't know if it matters but the files are on another strictly storage volume, they are not on the os drive.

Any other ideas?

Are they perhaps in the process of being indexed?
Are they folders in WMP?

Just some thoughts.

Sometimes I hate Microsoft... They must have been getting indexed... I can move them now!!! Is there anyway to find out what is being indexed at this moment, so I don't freak out again / or to stop it from indexing temporarily so I can get some work done?

Yes Chrispy. It's quite staightforward. Go into Control Panel. Select view by large icons. Go into Indexing Options and press the pause button.

Use the free program Unlocker 1.9.1 for unlocking folders and files locked by processes or programs.

This program adds a context menu called "Unlocker" to the right click menu. Before deleting or moving any folders or files, right click on the object and select Unlocker. This will display any processes which are presently accessing the object. This program also gives an option to kill the process so that the object (file or folder) can be moved or deleted. System integrity is not affected by killing the processes with this program.

A very useful utility for file management, and is available for both x86 and x64 platforms.
