New larger HD not showing the correct size ?

Actually i'm changing from a 60gb SSD to a 120gb SSD
I restored my image onto the new SSD using shadow protect.

The system boots ok but in 'my computer' and treesize my new drive is only showing the original 60gb.

I went to disk management and that shows a 120gb drive with no unallocated space ! extend partition is greyed out.

so how do I fix this please?

Can you post a screenshot of your Disk Management window? Are you 100% sure the new drive is a 120 GB SSD?

Yes absolutely sure and as you can see in the disc manager it sees it as 111gb
its Disk 1

What I see is a 60 GB disk that someone has give a name or 128GB

You could give it the name of 6 GB and it would stil be a 60 GB Disk.

well what I see is my brand new 120gb drive only showing up as a 60gb drive- I named it like that because that is its true size.

as detailed before using Diskpart which shows it as 111gb and disk manager which also shows it as 111gb
so are you doubting after all that I have shown you it is really a 60gb drive that I have renamed as 120gb drive in the hopes that it will magically increase in size?

Despite the label, Disk Management still shows the proper size for the drive, yet the drive properties do not. That's strange, but at least we know there is a definite issue.

I tried completely restoring again from the image - no luck
tried dragging large folders to the drive to see what would happen - it wouldnt let me, said the disk was to small

so it definitely thinks its a 60gb drive.

Maybe i'll try different software to image the drive

I'm just throwing some thoughts into the pool here...

IIRC, my Acronis True Image program wants to restore disk images into a partition the exact same size of the original image. And I believe the program will create that partition if the disk it is being installed on is larger.

Your imaging program may be doing something similar? Although why Disk Management would not show 2 partitions does not make sense.

Could the OS be 'retaining' the old disk size somehow?

If it were me, I would delete the partitions on the SSD, then create 2 new partitions - one 60GB (the exact size of the old one), and then restore the image to that partition. After Windows is up and running, then delete the second partition and extend the Windows partition into it.

I don't recall about Acronis, but during the restore process many imaging programs have an option to 'use the whole disk' if it is larger than the image. I know Macrium does and so does Paragon Migrate.

What about trying a clean install with a key (should be done anytime a clean install is done) and seeing what the Windows 7 installer thinks of the blank drive. If that comes up as a 120 GB drive, then you know the problem is with your imaging software.

I have just spent the last few hours trying to remedy this.
First I tried using different software eg HDClone that took forever and was a disaster with desktop freezing straight after boot.
Then I tried deleting the whole volume and creating a 59.9gb (exact size of old drive) and leaving the rest as unallocated space.
after several mishaps i managed to restore to this and at last Disk manager and my computer agreed that I only had a 59.9gb drive.
So in Disk manager I increased the size of the volume to 111.9gb -this worked ok it seemed but it did throw an error (which i cant remember)
any way I am back to where I started now as disk manager thinks I have 111.9gb and my computer only 59.9gb
?

It takes me about 2 hours to do a full, clean install, so I think I would have gone that route by now.

Anyway, try this out. Pull all drives from your system, except for the new 120 GB SSD. Try to install Windows 7 to is cleanly, just to see whatthe Windows installer thinks is the drive. If it still shows the same issue once Windows 7 is installed and booting, you might want to return the drive, as it could be a firmware issue.

The program is SIW SIW standalone version

There is also a link to them in my sig.

I'l bet you a dollar to a donut, that the program reports that you have a 60 GB SSD.

This problem has occurred before and has been shown to be a problem with Disk Management.

and see if it reveals unallocated space. If so then use the tool to incorporate the unallocated space.

I finally sorted this by using Paragon migrate OS to SSD which did the job perfectly with no fuss.

I guess its a problem with SSD's although I have done this before without a problem?
