Here you will find the latest USB3 driver for your MB; GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1155 - GA-Z68A-D3-B3 (rev. 1.0)
other than that you need to be using a USB3 compatible cable and drive. I believe there are two USB ports on some of the my books so you need to be using the right one.

Actually there's one port ,As for the cable at one end it's a USB 3.0 on the other end it's WD own port that they have the ( my passport )

Then you need only make sure you've installed USB3.0 drivers.

I'm not certain of the exact Mb/s for my FreeAgent but it's more like 10x your speeds iirc. Wicked fast.

Do you mean bits or bytes/sec? (ie do you mean 25-45 MB/s).

For sequential data transfers your USB 3 transfer rates will depend very much on where the data resides on the disk. For my 1TB My Book Essential disks the outer tracks (~90% free disk space) will give ~85 MB/s. For the inner tracks (~20% free disk space) you get ~45MB/s. This is on large sequential transfers.

Caching and such affects things but I think it's simple radial velocity that dominates the speed profile..

This is what HDTUNE says - I don't notice practical results quite this high.

I suspect that file size also has a part in the speed transfer.

Mp3 files from internal 3.0 drive to a second internal 3.0 drive.
Approximately 56 MB/sec

WMC recorded .wtv files from internal 3.0 drive to a second internal 3.0 drive.

If you would like a comparason, here is what I get. the 2 USB's are the same drive, the eSATA is a different drive, but all are 7200rpm.

esata-usb 3-2.png

Typically you will get 2.5-3 times the speed of USB 2.0 using 3.0.

I suspect the WD slows it down quite a bit. I have SIIG USB 3.0 PCIexpress card in both my Phenom with 8 GB ram running Vista64 and my AMD dual core with 2 GB ram running 32 bit W7. I use SIIG USB 3.0 docking stations with WD caviar black 6 Gb/s 64 MB cache 1 TB drives.

On the Vista64 machine I'm getting sequential read/write pretty close to the sustained transfer speed of the drive. Reads are typically 130+ MB/s (Crystal Disk Mark calls 1 million bytes per second 1 MB/s so that would jibe with sustained transfer rating of the drive of about 126 MB/s on WD stat sheet.) On the dual core I only get sequential reads/writes in the 65 to 75 MB/s range.

I suspect you could do better with USB 3.0 dock using an internal WD drive. Trouble is it's hard to "test drive" this stuff. One virtue of USB 3.0 via express card and docks is you can always move them to a faster machine later on.

It would seem that there are a lot of different speeds depending on hardware. My USB performance seems to tie in with MilesAhead and I also use a docking station.

Just as a comparison I have benched another SamsungHD103SJ (1000GB) 7200rpm running as an internal drive

I find the results interesting, depending on which benchmark you take my internal drive only just manages to out perform the USB3 drive .......... or does it??

Yes Pooch you are right. I think it also depends on what drive you are testing. Some are much faster than others.
