Upgrading PC: what is the best "bang for your buck" motherboard?

Hi, I am planning to upgrade my cpu from an old Intel E8400 to a i5 2500k. This, of course means that I will also have to upgrade my motherboard so what do you think the best bang for your buck motherboard is that goes with the afore mentioned 1155 socket cpu? I use my PC mainly for Gaming and school work if that helps

That's pretty much personal preference driven by the particular features you want on the motherboard and whether or not you are going to overclock the processor.

I wouldn't think you have to spend over $200, probably with an H67, P67, or Z68 chipset. Don't go for H67 if you intend to overclock.

I'd stay with one of the major brands.


The 2500K will make the PC fly. Your main concerns would be getting the capabilities you need and avoiding DOA or failing hardware---that is something of a crapshoot because all manufacturers and boards have a certain failure rate. You need a bit of good luck.

I wouldn't agonize over the choice as long as it is within your budget and has the right features.

There is no "one" that takes that title. The good news, though, is you'll find more to choose from than you ever cared to research. In the States, we use Newegg to help narrow down by features, brand, and price. I would use the website anyway, at least to find some models that work for you, and then find them at your normal retailer.

MSI do some pretty good 1155 boards,was gonna be my next upgrade,but might wait till bulldozer comes along!

I think if you are going for the 2500K you should get a P67 or Z68 MB. As far as which one, it would depend on your preference, features and reliability. I would suggest finding several in your price range with the features that are most important to you and read the user feedback. That's how I chose mine and feel I made a very good choice. Probably everyone who has one of a different make has the same opinion about theirs. The user feedback can give you a lot of information and tips about each board.
