Hi All

I was wondering if anyone could help me with an issue I'm having with my Windows 7 HP laptop. I've recently moved into student accommodation which requires us to register for the Internet (Studentcom), and when running on Windows 7 my laptop (HP G62-107SA) cannot find the internet connection.

I've tried a number of things to remedy this - disabling Avast Shields, running a Norton Removal Tool (Norton was pre-installed when I first got it but I installed Avast instead as I've never had any problems with it), disabling Windows Firewall as well as the netsh winsock reset command (and a few others - I've been trying since Saturday to no avail so it's no wonder I can't remember some of them!)

This problem isn't just confined to my laptop or my room either - my flatmate in the room upstairs has the same issue - the only way the two of us can get on the internet is by using an Ubuntu 10.10 disc, which is okay but we'd rather prefer to use Windows than have to keep booting up using a CD.

Also, the internet connection occasionally shows as connected (the little icon at the bottom comes up with 'Unidentified Network - Internet Access' generally about 10 minutes or so after we connect, but when we try to use Google Chrome or Internet Explorer to access the internet, we just get error messages (specifically Error 105 in Chrome).

Just to add - this is the second year I've stayed here, and I had no problems whatsoever with Keycom, our previous ISP here, and this is a wired internet connection.

Any help would be much appreciated! :)

Try resetting your network adapter by right clicking your wireless connection icon in the notification area and click troubleshooting. If That doesn't work, go into device manager and uninstall network adapter and reboot computer. If that doesn't work either then go to HP's website and look for the latest network adapter driver to download and install.

Hi Bassfisher

Thanks for your help, unfortunately those tips didn't work. I ran the troubleshooter on my connection after installing the new driver and it told me to wait at least 10 seconds before reconnecting the wire (which hasn't happened before when I've previously run the troubleshooter). All that comes up after that is the troubleshooter says that the Default Gateway is not available :(

I should add that my flatmate in the room upstairs has the same problem - he can get a connection using Ubuntu 10.10 but nothing using Windows 7 HP.

Any further help would be much appreciated :)

Hello MrB3050,

Can you please provide us with ipconfig /all output?
Click on Start => in run or search box type cmd, press enter. From the command prompt (black screen), Copy and Paste these ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt . Please attach the .txt file to be found in your Local Disk 'C' on your next post.

Also, if you have Bonjour installed, disable the Service for now.

Have you tried booting up to Safe Mode with Networking? Restart your computer, Tap F8 then select this option. Are you able to connect?

Hi 2xg

I've attached the ipconfig data for you.

I did have iTunes installed at one point earlier in the year, but I deleted it - is there anywhere Bonjour 'hides' within the file system? I've looked for it before and I can't find it, so any help would be appreciated :)

I ran in Safe Mode with Networking, and that didn't connect either I'm afraid.

I've used Revo Uninstaller which removed some iTunes files traces - no sign of any Bonjour files though.

I used the registry downloads - the connection is now recognised as a Work Network, instead of a public one, but it's still showing as an unidentified network and still doesn't connect to the internet - Error 105 still appears :(

Again, any further help would be appreciated :)

Make sure that DHCP is enabled both in your wired and wireless settings and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically' is also enabled.

Do you have a spare patch network cable?

Currently what type of AV, Firewall or Security Software do you have installed?
If you still have Avast installed, use this Utility Tool to remove it. Do you still have Norton installed?

I've got the free version of Avast Anti-Virus installed, and Windows Firewall. When I tried to reconnect earlier I disabled them but it didn't make any difference unfortunately - I was still getting Error 105, and the troubleshooter returned another 'Default Gateway is not Available' - elsewhere in the building the internet connection is apparently fine, but I know very few people here to ask.

Let's uninstall Avast for now and use this Utility Tool:
avast! Uninstall Utility

Also, please find a spare patch network cable, cat5e or cat6, borrow one if possible.

Hi 2xg

Thanks again :), but I'm still having the same problem, even after removing Avast.

I've tried my spare CAT5E cable, as well as the one I was given by the property manager this year - I'm still not able to connect using them, still an Error 105 in Chrome. I've used IE and that doesn't connect either - my flatmate uses Firefox and he has the same problem.

I'm mystified to say the least

Can we see another ipconfig /all when logged on to Ubuntu, of course coming from a working computer?

I'm running Ubuntu off a CD (I've not installed using Wubi or dual-booted as I'm not overly familiar with that kind of thing, and I'm not the most advanced computer user unfortunately) - I've run the ifconfig command and it comes up with this.

Code:

Oh...I found something....the default Gateway from your Ubuntu is different from your Windows. Let's manually assign IP to your LAN. How to Assign a Static IP Address in XP, Vista, or Windows 7 - How-To Geek
Please use this pattern:

IPv4 Address: 31.220.243.54
Default Gateway :31.220.243.255
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
DNS Servers: 77.244.128.60
77.244.128.61

If there's any IP Conflict just change the last digit to a 6, 7, etc.... 31.220.243.54

Thanks for your help again :) but I'm still having issues I'm afraid - I ran the troubleshooter - same old thing again with the 'Default Gateway is not Available', as well as the 'DCHP is not enabled' issue which was a first for the troubleshooter as it's not come up with that previously on this connection...

Hopefully this issue can be sorted soon :)

No problem, we'll continue with more troubleshooting as long as you won't give up yet. :D

Can you pls assign the Static IP to your room mate's computer? You've mentioned that he has the same issue as yours. Are you able to replicate the issue?

From your computer let's do some ping tests and post the results on your next post.
Open up a command prompt and type ping 31.220.243.255 press enter
Another one....ping 8.8.8.8 press enter

Please update us with your progress.

Hi 2xg

I won't be giving up just yet! :) Neither of us are at the flat at the moment, he's in London and I've gone home for a few days as I don't live too far away - I'll be back there soon to test the connection out once more, and he'll be back shortly too. :)

By the way, Linux is now running as a virtual boot on my laptop, instead of running off the disc (correct term? it's been installed through Wubi but I'm not sure what the technical term is for that kind of thing :o) - I tried to connect to the internet in the flat earlier on before I went for my train and it worked after unplugging the CAT5E cable at both ends then reconnecting it.

Thanks again, I'll get back to you about the connection issues soon :)

Hey

I'm back in my accommodation now, and the internet has finally come on when running on Windows 7!

All of us from the flat went down to complain yesterday, and it appears our ISP have reset all the connections or something (I'm not amazingly technical with networks yet! haha)

Thanks for being very friendly when it came to trying to get to the bottom of the issue :)
