Help me overclock!!

Hey, I'm trying to overclock my Computer in order to play Battlefield 3 at ultrahigh setting flawlessly, I barely got any overclocking experience, and when i overclock to 3.6ghz my computer crashed and turned off while playing battlefield 3. Apparently they told me i didnt overclock right and it was unstable. Like i said before Im new to overclocking.
anyways here's my computer spec
Processor: i7 920 2.6ghz
Video Card: Dual ATI Radeon 5970's
Ram: 6gb
Power Supply: 1100 watts (or 1200)
Operating System: Window 7 home premium 64 bit
HardDrive: 1.15 TB (terabyte)
I have a Alienware Area 51 Desktop, and it has Liquid Cooling and fans that i can be powered up to 100%, apparently it has good venting system (Atleast that what i was told) i currently have it at 3.4ghz and its not crashing. How far can i overclock without worrying about frying any component? Anyways if u leave instructions or suggestion to overclock please list them, and remember im a rookie so try to speak in english, becuase i have a hard time understanding on what people are talking about .

You might want to list your LC system such as is it a closed loop like the corsair H series or is it a custom loop and what size rad. Two, three, or a single fan system etc......

What MB is in your system along with the RAM. 6GB really doesn't tell anyone much, is it 1600, 1333, 2000MHz, etc....

Don't forget that when OC there is no one size fits all, every system is unique but there are some settings which will get you started if we have the right information.

As of Fans, I really dont know how many there are but i got control over 2 of them in the Alienware Command Center, and the graphic card fans. And my CPU is Liquid cooled

i'd say start by going to some overclocking fourms and read and make sure you no what you are getting into before
you do anything. then after that read more on the settings you need to change and how and where to change them.
after that always start out small and work your way up testing and retesting to make sure it right. keep a eye on your temps at all times.

just do a search for (overclocking fourms)

If your wanting to put the graphics on max and have it run smoothly you will need to overclock your graphics card, you wont notice much if any difference overclocking only the CPU as the CPU that you have is good by itself. However overclocking a graphics card requires more experience than overclocking a CPU and as such i wouldn't recommend it as you may easily fry the gpu.

Overclocking sites are other sites devoted to OC. You are obviously new to this.

Just remember overclocking will shorten its life span and can result in instability.

Dayums you guys are making it sound like if im signing my computer death sentence by overclocking, Idk, in the information about the Area 51 it says that im pretty safe in overclocking due to its liquid cooling and its ventilation system, but ill make sure to be careful!!

Post your specs, always helpful for any discussion of problems as well.

The thing with overclocking is that every system is different. Yours may be able to overclock 40%, but it could just as easily crash after 5%.

You need to familiarize yourself with the BIOS on your computer, figure out what each and every setting does, and find out which ones you need to change to overclock.
OCing your GPU is actually a bit easier and I even wrote a tutorial on it;

Since there are many questions on it, I might write a generic overclocking tutorial, but that would take a while. In the meantime, do what I suggested above before even THINKING about trying to OC. The last thing you want to do is melt your CPU.

Given your unfamiliarity with overclocking, I'd recommend you NOT do this.
And, considering the low specs of your system, I think you should simply buy a bigger, better machine.

You can search yourself. There is Core Temp, which also has a windows 7 gadget and CPUID Hardware Monitor.

For gpu there is GPU-Z.

Your MB manufacturer may have some utilities.
