What's the best way to view PDF files?

Hi,

I use Firefox to browse the internet and Google Chrome to view PDF files on my PC. I don't use Foxit, Sumatra or Adobe Reader cos I don't need to edit PDF files.

I don't want to install Google Chrome on my laptop. So, is there any way to view PDF files on Firefox or Internet explorer using an addon or something? :)

Sumatra has a plugin for Firefox, Opera and Chrome. But not IE. It isn't available as a separate plugin, but rather as an option on the install of Sumatra. Sumatra is much lighter than adobe. I am unaware of just a plugin that works without the installed program. Sumatra has a portable version, but I don't believe it offers the plugin. A Guy

Please forgive me, I'm not trying to be disrespectful. Rather than worry about plug-ins that could slow down your browser or cause other issues, why not install one of the many free PDF readers like Foxit, Sumatra, Nitro, etc? Just because you don't edit PDF files doesn't mean you can't use one of these products as your default reader. (I'll bet most people don't use half the stuff available in Windows 7 but they still buy it and install it. ;) )

If you're worried about taking up hard drive space, you might consider Cool PDF Reader. It has a very small footprint.

If you used Chrome as your browser it has a built in PDF reader which is halfway decent.

Nitro likes to crash very often. I prefer PDF-XChange Viewer as the most stable, fast and with the most features for free. For example, new add/edit Bookmarks and OCR. Also I like Its highly customizability.

I'd like a PDF program that can do everything the Pro versions of most of the PDF software listed in this thread except opensource. I once spent a few hours, searching, couldn't find nothing. I'm presently using Nitro and it stinks.

In my experience, there's loads and loads of different PDF readers and ways to read them, but the best, like it or not is Adobe Acrobat Reader
