How do I speed up windows Start-up & Shut down?

Okay, I want my Sony Vaio laptop to start-up faster and shut-down faster.

I've got 3GB RAM & Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 2.67GHz.

Also, How can I find out which programs I don't need and can uninstall, because I want to uninstall some programs, which I don't 'think' I use, nor need. But I'm not sure.

Generally, you start up faster by using msconfig to control which applications start every time Windows starts. Type msconfig into the start box and look at what is checked on the startup tab. You don't need all of that stuff checked to start up.

Hard to say what you can uninstall without seeing a list of what you have installed via control panel/programs and features.

Thankyou for your help both of you, it now shuts down much quicker, but it still takes about 1minute 20 seconds tofully start up, from the 'Welcome' screen, is this normal? How can I make the Welcome screen speed up?

That's not a bad speed for a laptop on a spinning drive.

There might be some sort of a "quick boot" setting in the BIOS. You'd have to look. But it won't make a huge difference.

You can use certain tools to take a deep dive into the boot process on your PC. That may result in some minor improvements, but you are already in a reasonable ballpark.

80 Seconds isn't too bad in my opinion, have you turned off non essential items in msconfig

I installed an OCZ Vertex2 on my Sony Vaio. Now it boots in 16 seconds.

That's a Solid State Drive aka SSD.

Any of them will knock your boot time way down, but they are expensive. Most of us just use them for the operating system alone and use another spinning drive for data. You may not be able to put 2 drives in a laptop.

I put a 90GB drive into my laptop and keep some of my data on a large USB stick. My wife uses an 80GB Intel and SD cards for some of her data.
