For about 4 months, I have been using the RC version of Windows 7 and until now, I have never encountered any problems and enjoyed it so much, it now is my OS.

That is, until recently it started to crash... What happens every time I boot my PC is that Windows freezes up, yet the current window will keep on working just fine. In fact, I am writing this while the rest of my pc is frozen solid. This happens every time, probably within 30-60 seconds of getting to my desktop.

The only way out I figured is Ctrl alt delete, from where logging off and on has the same effect as rebooting. The task manager freezes up as well.

I used Google and search, and found a ton of people with problems with W7, only no one seemed to have the same issues as me. Maybe someone can help me here!

(I hope this is enough information, as you see I am clearly not an expert on fixing ICT issues :p)

Hi, babatoetbag, welcome to forum.

Did you install something prior these crashes? If so, try to unistall this or restore your system to a point before crashes started.

Here's Brinks super tutorial about restoring your system.

From what you describe, the explorer crashes.

You might think the explorer is the window with the files and folders, but that's only part of it.
The whole windows shell, the taskbar, startmenu, it's all part of the explorer.

Can you make a list of the programs you have running, and especially the ones that auto start with windows?

Which virus scanner, and malware scanner? Voip maybe? Messenger? Cellphone suite? Any shell tweaks?

In the mean time you can temporarily fix it.
When the crash occurs, hold ctrl-alt-del, and in the taskmanager go to processes, rightclick on explorer.exe and end process.
Then go to the application tab in that same taskmanager and start a new task.
In the box type explorer.exe

Maybe it will crash again, but there is a chance it will not.

If it stays ok, it will give you the opportunity to do some checking.

Post back your findings.

Good luck

From your specs I see you have Logitech mouse. Setpoint, Logitechs mouse and keyboard control application, is not working very well with Windows 7. For me Setpoint caused my only crash.

If you have installed Setpoint, remove it. It's only my recommendation, somebody else can say something else.

And I still recommend to start with system restore and see if it fixes your issue.

If no go on the restore, what does taskmanager do when the comp freezes? does it do the same thing in safe mode boot?, 32 bit or 64?

The first thing I would check are the ATI cards ... you're running 2 of them plus the rest of your hardware with a 450W PSU .. way under powered if you ask me... The first thing I would try is a system restore .. if that doesnt help, remove one of the ATI cards and see if that helps... good luck

The only things that auto start windows are CCC (ATI drivers), Hitman Pro and speedfan. I installed Hitman after the problem first occurred. No virus scanner, no malware scanner other than that. Nothing of the other things you suggest.

Tried the taskmanager, but it (taskmanager) freezes up as well...

The only programmes I frequently use are Firefox, Chrome, iTunes and Live Messenger.

Oh and the GPU's are extremely power-efficient, they only use 90W each.

Hi Tews,

450w is indeed tight yes, and for sure with any hard gaming it will get into trouble.

But he stated it has been running solid for 4 months.

Plus, if a graphic card fails, the lights go out. :D

He is just typing and the browser works, but the rest freezes.

Looks like an explorer crash.
And since it crashes a short while after login, I think it must be something that loads on boot.

And I saw a remark about Logitech setpoint.
Could very well be the culprit.
That or any other program that starts with windows.

Ok.
Ditch speedfan first. It diggs very deep in your system and even the maker of the program states it is at your own risk.

Do you have the latest catalyst 9.7?

uninstall MSN also.

You have to first start as clean as possible and then one by one reinstall, to see where it goes wrong.

Have you read other stories about Explorer crashes here in SevenForums. My own, this with Logitech Setpoint I mentioned earlier, you can find here. Here is another story, here one more. Searching the forum you'll find you are not alone with your problem, and that somebody might already have a solution. This is a big forum, the best you'll find, with lot of geeks who really know what they are talking.

Hope you can solve this.

Spyware hmmm that will do it. That's one of the reasons I don't like helping people who havn't at least tried to reinstall Win7 first because that seems to solve 98 percent of the problems. I've been using setpoint since day one never caused a crash for me.

It's a pain to install them because the set point drivers havn't passed the Windows certification process, but the ones for the G-15 keyboard have been certified so they install easily.

You should uninstall the set point drivers first and then reboot. Once at desk-top right click the set point drivers and choose run in Vista compatability mode, the drivers will fail to install with a warning message... but then just wait approx ten seconds....... after which point Windows will prompt you to reinstall the drivers with different settings, choose to let Windows reinstall the drivers for you.

After that let the the program open up, double click on settings at which point it should ask if you want your mouse associated with this program, say yes and adjust settings. This procedure works for me everytime.

Logitech really needs to get those drivers approved, i'm not sure what the hold up is.
