dvd drive wont read any disks running windows 7

hi, my dvd drive wont read any disks, im running windows 7 64 bit, i have tried the options below but still no luck, any help would be much appreciated as it has me puzzled now!


i have had a search on here and tried this
to fix it:
- execute regedit
- search the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
- delete Upperfilter and lowerfilter entries.
- Reboot your system.

there was no upperfilter or lower filters to delete, i have also had a look in properties and it says the dvd drive is working fine, iv tried to uninstall it and restart still have the same problem,

any ideas???

These drives do go bad over time, it is conceivably possible the optic in the drive itself is bad.

is there any way i can fix this or anything else i can try to get it working?? the computer is only a year old

I honestly can't say without physically getting my hands on it.

All I can tell you is generally if it's showing as working in windows the problem is mechanical in nature.
meaning the electronics are working but the moving parts or the optic in the drive is bad.

:cry: it was working fine last week, and now its not, still opens and closes fine, everything looks ok in properties etc etc, just wont play them, there is a disk symbol comes up with mouse pointer when a disk is inserted, but then nothing happens

If your computer was manufactured by a proprietary makes such as Dell or HP, it normally comes with a hardware diagnostics utility that should help find any hardware that has gone bad.

I have an HP Pavilion desktop that has been plagued with startup issues that had me tearing my hair out. In the end I ran a full diagnostic test, which the DVD-RW/RWW failed.

If you have it, run the diagnostics. If not, do you know anyone who has a spare optical drive you could try?

Even if you have to buy one, they are not very expensive these days.

Try opening Computer with a disc in the drive. Right click on the optical drive and click open. It should show the list of folders. For example if it's a normal DVD it should have AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders. If you double click VIDEO_TS you should see a bunch of .vob and other files. If it can list the contents of the disc then chances are the drive itself is working.

it just keeps opening disk tray and a box pops up saying please insert a disk into drive D:. when i click open

I would try a bootable CD. Something similar to Partition Wizard iso version that comes up when the computer boots without depending in Windows. That should give an idea if it's hardware or software. Anything that can boot will do. Linux Live CD. Ultimate Boot CD. Disk imaging rescue CD. Anything like that. Even Windows install DVD if you have one.

I'd recommend on of the free imaging programs. Like Macrium Refelct or Easus ToDo. If you get bored you can try other operating systems/versions knowing you can put your saved image back. Also can save your bacon from a nasty BHO or virus attack.

Just make sure you test 'em as they vary quite a bit especially for supported disk controllers. Usually if you can boot the rescue CD and see your drives, the programs themselves work well. Easus ToDo and Macrium 5 now have USB 3.0 support. Makes for fast restores.

I would want to get one more test to point to probably hardware problem before messing around physically with the drive or cables. That's not my forte. If you get to that point then follow the advice of the hardware gurus. :)

Something you could try now is put any CD in the drive while it's sitting at shutdown. Power it up and select boot from CD drive in boot options. If it says "non system disc" error, at least it's seeing something. Not that helpful but you can do more when you have something bootable.

just tried this and nothing happened computer loaded straight up like normal lol, thats if i done it right of course :confused:

Sounds like hardware then. Not detecting anything in the drive. You could be lucky and have a loose connection. If you're not comfortable going in the box you might ask a techie friend to help you out.

If it's connected enough to send power to open the drawer then magus is probably right. There's a fault in the drive itself.
