Yesterday I installed RC1 of Windows 7 on my HP 6910p.

Afetr install I immediately noticed that the notebook makes much more fan noise then under Windows XP.
The fan seems to be running constantly and whenever I seem to do something a bit graphical it goes at full speed.

Are there any other (HP 6910p) users that have the same experience?
Is there something I can do / tweak to make my notebook quite again.

I have already disabled the superfetch however this only reduces the HDD activity.

If you have a non integrated video card (No idea what the term for that is), try accessing the setup for it (Nvidia offers the "Nvidia control panel") and checking the fan settings - it may be set to max.

If this does not work, try entering your BIOS and checking the settings.

It MAY be happening because Windows 7 requires more out of your PC than XP (Which I assume you upgraded from, based on your OS information), so it's attempting to cool it down. Try running HWMonitor (CPUID) and checking the temps of your CPU / GPU / HDD.

If you need specific HP info, advice, this forum has proved to be useful:

HP Business Support Center

It's not HP employees, but HP business users. I had a similar issue on a desktop. The fans never bumped up and my systems kept locking up when the CPU temp rose. Turns out there was an "easter egg" to get to to hidden page in BIOS settings to control the fan temp thresholds. Never would have found it if not for that forum.

One very probable reason... dust ... open your cpu fan and clean out all the dust accumulated ... I have done it for two of my friends and even for my own laptop ... it reduces temps from 75C idle to 55C idle.

I did have same kind of problem as wilkob with xp and 6910p. I install w7 and nothing chanced. Then I update bios F.12 to F17 and chipset to ver. 2,6,10,1043 and this helps, partly ! Now machine is quiet but sometimes when I turn it on the fan will start wiyh max speed and there is no way start w7 or even machine ! Only way out of this is disconnect battery for few seconds then all good. ??? Anyway this is much better than it used to be. It seems to be still bios bug and we are waiting for next update ?!
See Hp forum for this matter, they have to know this for long but still......

Following is useful in controlling fan speed:
SpeedFan SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer
monitors voltages, fan speeds and temperatures, shows hard disk temperatures, shows cpu temperatures, supports SCSI, can change fan speeds

HP 6910p running hot

I've had a business 6910p for about 2 years now. I have the 2.2ghz dual core. I think it's compact design does not really provide the best cooling situation for a core over 2ghz. It WILL keep cool, even under hard CPU duress. but that fan will blast on high to do it. I don't think there will be anything you can do under Windows 7. The OS is too graphic intensive thus while I feel the computer can handle running it (as long as you have max RAM, it will still want to heat up on you and that fan will run on high to keep it cool. Example - I was using my 6910p to encode video and the CPUs were running at over 90% to do this task. I was monitoring the temps of the CPUs with a freeware program called CoreTemp. Through the operation it was running at about 76C. that's pretty warm but it was ok. :)
