It should just stay connected.. So sadly it sounds like a faulty drive / enclosure.
Are you able to try the drive on a second PC, to see if it does the same thing?

If it does then its almost certainly a problem with the drive, else a problem with the PC..

Let us know

See if Windows is trying to put your external HD to sleep or if power management is enabled for the USB port or the HD's USB interface.

if power management is enabled for the USB port or the HD's USB interface.
how do i do that

found this and hope it helps
Try the following steps and check the result.
Step 1: Change the power settings
a. Click Start, type power options and hit enter.
b. On power options window, click "change when the computer sleeps"
c. Click "Change advanced power settings"
d. From the list of items, expand Hard disk.
e. Change the "Turn off hard disk after" setting to "Never"
f. From the list of items, expand USB settings and expand its sub item "USB selective suspend setting" and then change the setting to "Disabled"
g. Apply the changes and check the result.

Probably already tried this I hope but does this behaviour happen on different USB ports on the PC?

I only ask as I remember an old school trick that instead of waiting for the machines to shut down (as they were sooo slow) we would stick some metal in the usb socket and short it, which killed the pc instantly..

Change the usb cable also if possible.. but if it worked 100% on your xbox then the cable is likely fine..

Can you give us a link to the product (from a shop site or manufacturers)

Only other recommendation is to look in the event logs directly after it happens the next time.. (really for technical users who know what they are looking at)

Those are in control panel, administrative tools, event viewer..
Then on the left hand side select Windows logs, then System logs.. double click that should list lots of system events.. Look for any warnings / criticals at the time the system rebooted and let us know - feel free to copy paste the text from one and we can see if it is relevant

Disk Snapshot

Let us see some clips from The disk management console.
Start --> (type in the search) Disk Management and select disk management and click. Try to highlight the disk in question.
Use the screen clipping tool in acccesories and take a snap shot and save it. Click the paper clip at the top of your message window and upload the snapshot.

Mobo

I have found some info on your mobo. Is it an Asrok? Wolfdale 1333-D667 P1.40 ?
Looks like you have two USB ports, correct? If so how many USB devices are you using? (I mean plugged in)

Go Start --> Control Panel --> Device Manager --> Universal Serial Bus Controllers and scroll to USB Root Hub, right click, select properties. This is with your drive plugged in and working. Select the power tab and look at what you are using of the availabel power for that hub. On the power management tab untic "Allow the computer to turn off this device" (temporary change for test purposes)

If you have more than one hub check them all. could you post what is available and what is being used?

Fixed?

After you changed the mouse, Is the drive functioning properly now?
I think you missed one step in going to your USB hub prperties. The clip shows properties for Universal Serial Bus Controller. Scroll on down to USB Root Hub and look at the properties.

No Tics

Leave them unchecked for now.

The hub that shows a usb mass storage device is where your external disk is plugged in is that correct? If so it is not drawing any current. What kind of enclosure is this disk in? it is pointing to there is a problem there such as the enclosure or the disk. My first choice would be the enclosure. You should be able to remove the disk from the enclosure and install it in your rig. You'll need a cable, sata if that is what the disk is.
