HI,

I have dictionary called the Unified Medical dictionary English-Arabic

anyway, i have the ISO file
i installed it on Win7 x32 with no problem

but i tried to install it on Winx64 but it says an error like "the setup file is not compatible with Win7 x64"

I tried to search for the x64 version but i had no success, google sometimes becomes lame u know....
I tried to just copy the already installed dictionary folders to Win7x64 but it didnt open cuz it seems that it needs to be installed

So is there any way to like edit that setup.exe file or something to work on x64 version cuz it seems if i can just bypass that step it will work

or like a work around the "copy whole folders" and get it to work

I really need some help with it,
thanks in advance,
Elsayed,

sometimes 32 bit applications have 16 bit installer and that won 't work on 64 bit system, but if this is not the case did you try to run installer in compatibility mode? (right click/properties/compatibility). Installer generally does three things: creates program directory, copies some DLL files to system directory and writes some data into registry. You could trace those things in Win32 installation and try manually recreate this on 64bit machine, but who knows if it will work. Also search for portable version, those don't require installation and frankly now a days I don't use anything else but portable applications unless there is no other way.

Hey Pete4

I did try to run it in compatibility mode but it didnt work

about tracing the files.....i am not sure what i should look for.....i know the file directories and the reg entries but i dont know about the DLL files

So is there a way to find out what exactly the installation does?

and i did search for the portable version but idk what is wrong with google , its just the same results if i write Unified Medical dictionary English-Arabic or if i added like WIN7 x64 or portable.....same damn results

thanks

Elsayed,

How old is the dictionary?

Have you tried installing it in compatibility mode?
(right click the installer>properties>Compatibility>choose OS)

You could try UniExtract.exe, portable app will extract all the files from installer, but it doesn't work with everything.
IMO It is kind of convoluted to use Virtual PC in XP mode to run one program, especially if it works in Win7 32bit, (I would go on a limb and assume you also need XP license here? ouch ) but maybe it's the only way?

There is no requirement to buy a separate license for XP Mode.

It's a freebie given to those who have Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate.

I agree it seems a bit like overkill to run one program, but if you really need to run that program, it is a cost-free method.
