Can I take HDD out of old computer and put in my new one?

Hi, I was wondering if I could take out my Hard Drive with all of my games, videos, word documents, etc. and put it into a new computer I plan on building. I was also wondering if I did this I could avoid having to reinstall the OS or at the very least avoid having to buy a new one.

You can do it if you have a retail Windows license. If you have an OEM license, you will probably have an activation problem if you change the motherboard.

How successful it will be is another question. Windows 7 seems to be more accepting of it than earlier versions of Windows.

The general recommendation here is to NOT do it, but the fact is there have been quite a few posts from people who have done it with few problems.

try it out but def back up all your files to something. online, dvd etc etc.
