I am having trouble with my external hard drive because every time I plug it in, it decides it wants to change its drive letter (first it will be External ( F: ) Then it will change to External ( G: ) after plugging it back in most likely after my computer reboots) . I have looked around a little to see if there is a way to have my external remember what drive letter to pick but even thinking of the logic behind the situation, I can't imagine there being a way.
But that is not necessarily my biggest issue, I want my external to have Folder Icons for each one of my TV show folders and etc. The reason I brought up the changing drive letter is because when I assign an icon to the folder I want it on, the file path includes the External( F: ) or External( G: ). so if the drive letter changes, it can't find the icons anymore. I'm just wondering if there is any way that I could keep the Icons on my external so they go to each computer, but have like a dynamic file path or some other deal that lets me access them regardless of the drive letter.
Anyone got any ideas?

Hi,

I'm not sure about the icon part, but the usual trick with USB drives is to assign them a drive letter further down the alphabetical order (e.g. X or Y or Z) that prevents them from conflicting with letters earlier on up the alphabetic order. It should also work for assigning letters like F and G too.

You do this by using Disk Management, as shown in the image below. Simply right-click on the disk, and then choose the Change Drive Letter and Paths option.

Regards,
Golden

Thanks! I will try this :) so this drive letter will stay true for whatever computer I plug it into?
Meaning, it will remember it even if its not on the same computer?

Set up a folder for your icons on the C drive. They don't have to be on the same drive as the folder.

i would keep the icon in the folder you are changing , that way the path will still be the same despite the drive letter changing, i believe if you keep the icons on a folder in the c drive the path to the folder will include the drive letter ,rendering it useless if the drive letter changes.

If they are in a folder on the C drive it the icon reference will always point that folder no matter what the drive letter of the folder on your external drive is.

Try this mhelseth93

1. Download any icon file of your choice. It should be *.ico file.

2. Open up your notepad and type the following or just copy and paste the code

[autorun]
icon=icon name.ico

3. Change the icon name to the icon file name.

4. Now from your notepad go to file save as,change “Save As Type” to “All files” and “File Name” to "autorun.inf".

5. Save the autorun.inf without the quote and your .ico file to the external drive

Now... no matter if your external drive change letter or plug in to any computer the icon will appear.

Hope this help and works for you....:)
