I'm thinking of buying the,

Corsair Force Series 3 90GB SATA 3 6Gb/s Solid-State-Drive.

So,i need your opinion\advice. Good idea? Bad idea?

It should work just fine on a SATA2 port, but it will be limited to SATA2 speeds.

For example, youll Probably see Seq. Reads in the 250-275ish range.
To take advantage of the speed its capable of, youll just have to upgrade to a Motherboard with a SATA3 port.

This has the SandForce SF-2281 controller, which is known to be having some problems, a recent firmware update may have helped. Let time and other users test these SSDs.
I can't recommend any SSD with the new sandforce controller at this point.

The Crucial M4 6GB/s is getting great reviews and doing well in the endurance testing.

About 3 weeks ago i bought a OCZ Vertex 3 w/ Sandforce 2281 controller could not get it to work right, i jumped through all the hoop's with no success, firmware update, then there was the NVidia motherboard fix nothing helped. It shouldn't be this hard to get something to work, so i sent it back for a refund. You would think waiting to the second or third gen they would work right out of the box. Just my 2 cents. :(

I agree with everything posted above. You will get good results with the Crucial M4. I have the 64GB M4 in my laptop which is sata 2 and get good results and no problems. I also have one in my desktop. Here's what it will do on sata 2.

Well,it seems that SandForce SF-2281 controller is a nightmare! :shock:

(I plug the ocz in laptop and now i must find a future proof sata 3 ssd for this system).

I dont have many options in my area.

You see because is also for future (sata 3) usage i want the ssd to be fast and also reliable.

I tend to agree as well.


Think Id look toward Crucial as well, or Intel.


But, TBH, if you do not have a SSD now....

Even something like a SATA2 Intel would be such a huge increase in performance. You'll be quite impressed with it coming from spinners.
You wont be winning any benchmarks contests with it, but theyy are still very fast, and dependable.

They also have SATA3 Intels, but they are a bit pricey.


Although, the SATA3 drives may be prefered if you can find a good one.
Still, given the choice, I think Id stick with Intel or Crucial .... even if that choice means going SATA2 over a faster drive that more likely to fail on you.

I would go with the larger size. Plenty of room. If you have huge amounts of videos or music then put them on the HDD for storage.
Also if a copy is stored on the HDD and the SSD breaks you have extra copy.


I have 67.9GB free out of 111GB usable. It is a 120GB rated but has the built in reserve space which all SSD's have.
I put all my Windows Back ups and Macrium images on my HDD. They are only used if you need them and you can boot from CD to reimage if necessary.

I have maybe 300-400MB of pictures and Snips on the SSD. The other 20GB is already on DVD and now on my HDD.
If I want one I get it off the HDD.

I realize my set up would work on a smaller GB version I just like having the extra space if and when I want it.
Personal choice.

With what Hopalong has said, I would add that for me I find 80GB to be far more than enough room.
In fact, a 64GB would probably be about perfect for my OS/App drive. 40GB was a bit to small and was getting a bit cramped.


But, we all have different needs, and it is certainly better to have a bit more than you really need than not enough.
You should have a pretty good idea what you will need.

My OS SSD only holds Windows and Apps though. All Media and Games are on other drives, so my particular space requirements are not that high.

If you do not have a Sata III port, there is no need to go for a Sata III SSD. For the OS, there is anyhow no performance difference whether it is II or III. The OS lives on the fast SSD access time. Data transfer rates are relatively unimportant.

I had good luck with my three OCZs (60 and 90GB), but I know that some of their models are real dogs. You have to read the reviews - on Newegg.com is a good source.

Agreed.

More a matter of preference and $$$$.
The Intel 320 120GB was within my budget at $210 this past May.

The Crucial m4 and the Samsung 830 128GB are both $210 right now at Newegg. :cry:
I would have to flip a coin to decide which one. :(
