vista won't let me make a new partition.

I'm not sure this is the right place to post this, so im sry if im mistaken.

I'm trying to dual boot to get vista and w7, but my vista won't give me more than 300mb space on my second partition. I saw an old guid to get past it, but it told me to delete all my hibernation files and recovery files and for about 50% of the comments that didnt work. My question is: Is it safe to delete those files or is there a newer and more effective guide or should i just install w7 on the same partition as vista`?

When you use vista's disk management utility to shrink vista and create a windows 7 partition, vista will automatically calculate the space that is NOT being used so that the partition can be drawn.
You can significantly shrink the size of vista so that the hard disk is shrinkable to create a new volume for windows 7. To do so:
1-Defragment your hard drive-significantly reform position of the data on the hdd
2-Go to cmd, right click run as admin, type in : powercfg -h off (turns off hibernation feature)
3-Delete restore points. Go to Computer, click on system properties, click on system protection, click on configure, click on delete all restore points.
4-Install vista service pack 2: it has a cleanup utility to delete service pack backups and to reduce size of winsxs folder.
You should have enough room to install windows 7 after this.

My solution was to use GParted to shrink the Vista partition, leave the empty space unallocated. Then Win7 install will make its own partition in this new space. Problem is, my Vista was trashed after the shrinking, but it worked again (got fixed, I guess) after Win7 installed. I haven't touched Vista since then, but booted it once to the desktop to see that it worked. But the other choice is to use something like Acronis Disk Director to shrink the volume. Because I didn't want to go through all the trial-n-error of fixing it up to let Vista shrink it.
