No 32 bit browser does NOT work. 64 bit works fine. Win7-64

Hi All,

Windows IExplored(9)-32 & Crome-32 do not work. (Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): Unable to resolve the server's DNS address.)
IExplorer(9)-64 works just fine. I've been researching my issue for a few days now and have no success inplementing the recommended fixes I've found, which included - I'll rip them off for you, without looking up the exact phrasing:
  • command line winsock flush ets.
  • "Turn Windows features on or off" uncheck, restart, recheck.
  • Complete un-install of windows Internet Explorer and re-install (from Windows update module).
  • Tools\internet options\reset.
There seems to be something fundamental to the Windows 7 64 Ultimate operating system that is preventing the 32 bit browers from working.

There are 2 potential issues that I feel may have contributed to this situation:
  1. I had installed ASUS Gamer OSD. When I tried to operate the program, it said I had installed a 32 bit version and it would not run on a 64 but system. Suspecting this to be a potential cause, I tried to unistall it, but it would not go. I bought Uninstall Tool www.crystalidea.com and used 'force removal'. This appeared to largely remove it. I then searched the registry with regedit and removed all evidence of GamerOSD & SmartDoctor (wich was installed at the same time as GamerOSD). Unfortunately this did not fix the situation.
  2. I had also recently installed a Startup delay application to 'feed in' certain startup applications upon booting the system. I wasn't happy with how it worked and uninstalled the program AFTER using the startup restore feature. I fear the resore feature may not have resored the startup proceedure properly. I've scoured through msconfig to see if there was anything obvious, but could not come up with anything.
There appears to be something wrong with a low level operation that does not allow or recognize a 32 bit browser from opperating. Any help would be appreciated.

THANKS!

Well, your issue is a bit different as it generates a dns error. Can you access Seven Forums directly with the ip address from a 32 bit browser?

74.86.171.210

You can try flushing your dns

Start> In search box type cmd> Right click cmd.exe in results above and choose Run as administrator> When the command prompt opens type

ipconfig /release

Enter

ipconfig /renew

Enter

ipconfig /flushdns

Enter

If no help, I'd suggest you try running the System Files Checker

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

You can also do a clean start to see if a program is interfering

Hi, Thanks again for your input. Much appreciated!

  • When I enter the IP address in the 32 bit browser and hit enter, the web address appears. http://www.sevenforums.com/
  • I've done the ipconfig routines several times already.
  • I've done the SFC /Scannow twice previously also.
  • I'll give the clean boot routine a shot in the morning and post results.
Thanks again.

Sorry for the delayed reply to your most recent list of actions to be taken:

  1. Start> Control Panel> Network and Internet> View network status and tasks> Local area connection> (You can try diagnose, and see if it finds and corrects any errors, if not, continue from this step) No problems discovered.
  2. Properties> Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)> Click properties button> On general tab make sure Obtain an IP address automatically, and Obtain DNS server address automatically are both checked> Setup matches yours.
  3. Click on Advanced tab> DNS tab> Confirm your settings are the same as in the 3rd picture> Setup matches yours.
  4. Click on WINS tab> Make sure setting are the same as my 4th picture Setup matches yours.
Unfortunately, my network settings you mention are all as they should be. Hopefully you have some more areas of potential problem I can troubleshoot.

Regards, Mike

Hi Britton30,

Thanks for the reply. The result of the sfc /scannow are "no issues found". I've attempted a system restore. The most relevant restore point is early DEC - right around the time of the 32-bit browser issue beginning. The next earlier restore point is Aug-10. (I was hoping to not have to go back this far, but will if all else fails).

I will give the Revo Uninstaller can find anything left behind by the Forced Uninstall of the CrystalIDEA software's Uninstall Tool. Will report back results.

Thanks again for your valued input!

Mike

The Revo Uninstaller did not find any remains from the ASUS gamer OSD.

I've been having a look in the Event Viewer and found something that looks problematic. There seems to be a lot of this:

Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ntdll.dll

And some of this:

Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\syswow64\kernel32.dll

I've taken control of the system folder and files, but was unable to overwrite the ntdll.dll file I copied from another WIN7-64 bit machine of mine. I'm going to try and boot from the Windows CD and see if I can make the replacement.

Will report back.

Hey Britton.

Thanks for posting the nifty IE Fix-Up program, created by Captain. It's a fantastic tool! I executed all of the commoands, but unfortunately still have the same issue with 32-bit browsers. Thank you very much for posting!

It's looking like a Repair Install may be in order. There may be another way to fix it, but I'm afraid it's escaped us.

You might try creating a new Administrator account, and see if 32 bit works there. If so, your user account is corrupted, and you could transfer everything to the new user account.
