Bringing the out-of-process plug-in architecture across to Windows and Mac also brings another advantage: the ability to run plug-ins compiled for Intel 32-bit architecture from within a 64-bit Opera process. And 64-bit Opera is the other delightful gift we're giving you at Opera Labs this Christmas!
64-bit Windows and Mac have been in the works for a while, but we didn't want to release them until we had a way of running all plug-ins that's completely transparent to the user: This is now possible with the out-of-process plug-in architecture, so here we are! The 64-bit versions of Opera offer performance improvements in some specific areas and allow Opera to have more freedom in allocating memory.

The Alpha uses a different Profile and will not affect other versions of Opera

Yes, I've installed it. So far, so good. Can't see much of a difference in how it operates over the 32 bit version though.

installed it on my win7 ultimate x64 system, it froze my pc, requiring a cold boot. tried once more after restart, froze again. opera no longer is on my pc. waterfox 9 works fine. firefox nightly x64 11.0a1 works fine. ie9 x64 or x32 works fine. firefox 9 x32 works fine. chrome 17.0.963.6 (x32 of course) works fine. not so opera. will not be trying again for a LONG time.

I've ran into one problem so far...while copying my Speed Dial bookmarks over to the new browser's Speed Dial, I've noticed that on some websites that they load a bit slow. One in particular (walmart.com) totally hangs without loading. When this happens, it says that it is looking up hostname plus-com. I am set to use the Google DNS, but I've not heard it called that before. In any case, the website loads normally on the older version.

No problems here. Just started playing with it for real though. Seems nice..... love it so far. But then, been an Opera user for years. :)

I haven't messed with it for the past couple of days, because it seems to have a significant memory leak. Windows popped an alert on it's memory usage and asked to close it, which I did. I will check it out further when I get the time.

Update. I like this version but you can certainly see that this is an Alpha. I've had problems with video's on multiple sites. Not so much the video itself as to keeping the shot in the frame. Some pages do noticeably load faster than others. Feels "jerky" for first little bit after a page load then smooths right out. No crashes or memory events. Looks like a real winner when finished.

I was considering of switching to Opera but it lacks a few things and there are not extensions for it. IMO there are no good browsers any more. FireFox went insane, Chrome wants to know your Life, IE is still trying to build the house and Opera is trying to show off it's muscles in the closet.

Use stable version of Opera 11.5/6? for now. This will be nice soon. Still no major major problems , no crashes, but clearly a work in progress as stated.Yahoo says "they haven't tested this browser yet...", but when I go into mail it works beautifully.Very quick/snappy. Lickin my chops for this ....... soooooo close! :)

What do you feel that Opera lacks? I don't know that they would work on the 64 bit version, but Opera certainly has extensions (Tools>Extensions>Get Extensions).

I have been using it as my only Opera for some time - no major problems - although I alternate between browsers, so take that as a factor.

I have to agree. I don't run many extensions myself but then in my personal usage I don't really need many and Opera either has the feature(s) "built in" or available as extensions. Have found nothing "missing" that is even potentially wanted/needed. Curious myself seekermeister.
